South Park
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
Lowest Price we can find: $14.99

Editorial ReviewCartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny hop from the tube to the PlayStation in this mischief-filled game. You'll have the daunting task of saving South Park from a comet heading straight for South Park. In a bit of humor that is typical of the South Park series, the comet is visible only every 666 years. Defense comes via an arsenal of weapons that includes sniper chickens, cow launchers, snowballs (white and yellow), and Mr. Hanky the Christmas poo, who leaves a trail of you-know-what. Among the enemies, which change with each of the game's five episodes, are loud-mouthed turkeys that pop from the butts of larger turkeys, as well as mutant clones.

South Park's five episodes are broken into sublevels and are introduced by familiar characters, such as Chef. Of course, this game is filled with warped and off-color humor. For example, a fart sound denotes toggling between menu choices and a tally for quantity of helpless animals killed. You weren't expecting this game to be politically correct, were you?

Drawbacks include the repetitious music and character voices, as well as the slow onscreen movement, which impedes the game's multiplayer capabilities. The simple graphics used in the television show do not translate as effectively into this format. Lastly, the playing area is too expansive and visibility is often limited due to the white-on-white winter setting. --Kasty Thomas

Pros:

  • Unique introductory scenes
  • Warped South Park humor
Cons:
  • Simplistic graphics
  • Playing area too expansive, often with limited visibility
  • Slow movement response

South Park by Acclaim
This game really rocks! ...I enjoyed it very much! Cool graphics, cool characters, and I had a blast with the cow-launchers! For those who like South Park, I suggest you buy this game!

The best Street Fighter yet ? I think not !
Street Fighter has amazed me for years and not one of them was considered the worst Street Fighter game of all time...until Street Fighter: The Movie was made. This fighting game is based on the horribly made Street Fighter movie starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia. This game was released for three platforms a year after the movie was released on video...the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Arcade. None of these versions fared well with the series ! Even though the arcade version created a huge audience of fans, which probably lasted for a few months or weeks because of the digitized graphics and solid playability, this is still considered the worst Street Fighter game and at the same time, the worst Street Fighter movie ever made. Real SF veterans wouldn't even call it Street Fighter. They would just call it a Mortal Kombat game on ... Now, to give some info on the game. The graphics are very dated by todays standards, considering the fact that it was made by Acclaim, the guys who created Mortal Kombat II. Before, the digitized graphics caught the eyes of millions of gamers, but as we see them today, digital graphics just don't cut it no more ! They just look horrible and stupid ! As for the sound...BLEH !!! Galaga's audio sounds even better than this garbage ! The music sounds very played out and the voice actors sound like they're trying too hard to sound like the original Japanese characters, just like the cast of characters from the movie, trying to pose like their video game counterparts. You should listen to Ryu's "Hadouken", Guile's "Sonic Boom", and Ken's "Shoryu Reppa". They really sound horrible, tired, and defunct. I'm not even gonna go with the line of characters. If you've seen them in the movie, then you already know who they are. But there's a code where you can actually unlock Akuma (whom is not featured in the movie). But from what I'm looking at, Akuma looks stupid too ! As for the gameplay...it reeks ! This is what you get when you have get Acclaim involved in a (what you call) Street Fighter game. It plays like a clunky version of Street Fighter II with horrible balance and nonsenseable controls. So in the end, Street Fighter: The Movie is the worst Street Fighter game of all time ! The entire SF series made by Capcom of Japan have sold well on the shelves like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Street Fighter II, andStreet Fighter EX. As a longtime vetaran of Street Fighter, I think that this game should stay where it belongs...the shelf it has been displayed on. This game is a real dust collector on the used video game shelves ! If you want the true Street Fighter experinces, get the ones that were originally made by Capcom and only Capcom ! Whatever you do, ignore this piece of garbage !

Conflict Zone: Modern War Strategy
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
Lowest Price we can find: $7.29

Amazon.com Enter the world of real modern warfare, where the manipulation of media and civilians leads to military victory. As the commander of peacekeepers against terrorist armies, you must build a campaign using strategic brilliance and spin control. Rescue hostages with news cameras rolling and gain public support to upgrade your units. Harm innocents and your popularity and power will plummet. Take control of terrorist factions and resort to vicious techniques such as brainwashing, media manipulation, and human shields to further your cause. Test your strategic mettle against the direct AI engine used by today's defense forces.

Fine if you get it at a bargain price
In Conflict Zone, it's the year 2010 and the forces of peace (the ICP) are fighting against the forces of chaos (GHOST). Both manipulate the media to tell their story.

On one hand this is your traditional strategy combat game. You control troops, you build barracks and weapons factories, you crank out marines, grenadiers, tanks and jeeps.

On the other hand, the media is always watching. So it's important to build refugee camps, show just how much work you're doing to maintain peace, and get key shots of the enemy and the atrocities they are committing. That media attention - and your subsequent popularity - are just as key to winning the war as actual units and troops are.

The graphics are resonably good, rolling across the meadows and mountains of the Ukraine and other hot-spots. You can zoom in and out and rotate at whim, getting a super-close-up of your units or a far-off view of the field. The AI is also reasonable, with units coordinating attacks on the most important targets first.

What really was annoying, though, was the interface. I've played hundreds of strategy games - it's my favorite type of game to play - and even with the tutorial the unit control in this game was pretty awful. I've heard this from many, many other people, and some simply refused to play after the first few attempts. I don't know I would give up on it quite that quickly, but it definitely makes the game far more frustrating than it should be.

Also, the various cut scenes of talking heads telling you to "save the civilians" or "kill the enemy base" never line up properly with the mouths moving. The mouthssit there yapping for a good 5-10 seconds after the speech is done. There are various little things like that that, while not major when it happens once, get really annoying when they are happening continuously.

It's a very nice attempt at something "different" with the media angle, but it ends up being a not-great strategy game with a PC bent to it. You should be able to find this for half price or less, so it might be a good "in between" game to play while waiting for one of your must-haves to come out.

yay a motorcycle game for gamecube!
Unfortunately, this game is very difficult because it plays so very fast*. Reaction time is in the micro-seconds. Collision detection is very greedy. There are fundamental flaws in the menu and navigational components within the entire game.

If possible, rent/borrow/pretend to play this game before you buy it. Although i hate to recommend such a thing for a gamecube game (a motorcycle one at that!! there is only one other: Extreme G3), it is necessary in this case. I would even suggest that players contact the developers of this game and complain about whichever aspects of the game are undeniably horrible. Hopefully the sequel will be comparable to Burnout 2 or Midnight Club2**. And Yes, this game is somewhat similar to the Road Rash series. ( play burnout 2 instead of this game; it is much better.) I purchased this game because:
- i enjoyed burnout 2
- i own a motorcycle

THE BAD:
1) cannot see beyond most turns.
2) timer always present, always racing against checkpoints, not opponents or stunt targets.
3) traffic unforgiving, but predictable after 2nd attempt
4) AI opponents (always) on your ass. Crash once = 2th place.
5) menu, navigational glitches everywhere
6) 'boost' is blinding, cannot steer reliably while boosting
7)playtesters are morons. they are to blame for everything.
8)Rumble feature is horribly inconsistent with visuals

THE GOOD:
a) sense of speed/crashes
b) stunts are awesome! (i like kicking over the computers bikes!)
c) graphics amazing
d) license levels
e) custom choice of bike/rider color schemes
f) euro-driving atmosphere
g) soundtrack ok

I would not pay more than $20 (w/ shipping) for this game. It is fun, but in an aggravating, annoying, self-destructive kind of way (sorta like f-zero for snes in king mode). My girlfriend refused to watch me play because of the graphic depiction of motorcyclist accidents and catastrophes ;) . Read the reviews of this game for other systems to better inform yourself.

*Only flaw with GC version is slight slow-down in heavy traffic with multiple-opponents
** I have not yet played Midnight Club 2, but i hear there are motorcycles in it.
