This is a 1/48 Plastic MH-6 Stealth Quiet Attack Helicopter from Academy Plastics. It's for ages 10 and up. The deep black of a moonless Persian Gulf night shielded a small gunboat from detection. Silently creeping through the dark waters, the small boat was desiring to prey on defenseless oil tankers. The ship's crewmen were secure in the knowledge that they were invisible to the eyes of the tankers. However, without any warning, violent explosions ripped across thesurface of the small gunboat. The MH-6 Night Hawk had struck! FEATURES: Plastic pieces attached to sprues and molded in black and brown. The surface of the helicopter is decorated with fully engraved panel lines and rivet detail. Highly detailed cockpit interior includes gauges and controls. Two life-like pilot figurines are included. Rotor assembly delivers heartily in the realism department. Helicopter cockpit is covered with clear plastic that may be tinted with black paint for maximum coolness. Detailed pictorial instructions guide you through assembly. REVIEW
Some inaccuracies, lacking in detail, but sturdy and it does move well I bought this T-72 after buying a Merkava, another tank in the Academy 1:48 tank series. All the tanks use the exact same hull, gearbox, tracks, and wheels. That's the inaccurate part, since all the tanks have to slightly distorted to share this setup.
In addition, the cannon isn't a long as it should be, the front fenders need more of a curve to them, and the front deck needs more slope. The external fuel drums in the rear are much too low.
Tanks in 1:48 are darned hard to find. I use these for 28mm modern skirmish wargames. Being motorized, these tanks are tough enough to be pawed at by gamers. They lack the small bitty details (antennas, hooks, tools) common to 1:35 tank models but I consider this a plus. Detail is limited to shallow relief molded onto the hull and turret.
The preassembled gearbox uses two electric motors, each with its own set of nylon gears. The front and back axles are steel, while the twelve bogey wheels (six on each side) slip onto plastic axles molded onto the hull. The drive wheels register with an extended part of the final gears so they don't slip. They do, however, tend to slide off the axle. A dab of superglue solves this minor problem.
The tank is powered by either two C or two AA batteries (there are plastic adaptors for the AA batteries) held in the control box. The control box has two levers controlling the forward and reverse for each track. The power runs through a ribbon cable of four thin wires and connects through a hole in the back of the hull.
The rubber tracks stay on nicely and it's very rare that one slips off from driving. The tank moves very slow at about 5 inches a second but that works out to about 15mph in scale which is realistic. The motors are geared down so much that the tank has a lot of climbing power, but the tracks cannot be moved by hand. It's not quiet by any means with the whine of the motors and gears. Parents might find the sound annoying.
The only drawback is the cord. The cord is only about 2' long which means you have to crouch over the tank if driving it on the ground. However, the motors and gearbox take up only the back half of the tank's interior. Someone clever with electronics could modify these tanks into full Radio Control (which is what I plan to do once I become clever).
The model snaps together with very little effort, though some cement makes a sturdier model and eliminates gaps between parts such as the cannon halves I would recommend this model for a first-time builder except for attaching the wires. They really need to be soldered to the motor. An important note is to string the wires through the hole in the hull BEFORE soldering them to the motors. The model is made of styrene which can be painted with regular model paints. There are stickers which look nice for stickers. They're not as nice as waterslide decals but they blend in with matte paint and are durable.
Altered and updated a great deal over the years, the USS Kitty Hawk remains in service, patrolling near Japan since mid 1998. The focal point of much history, the Kitty Hawk served during the Vietnam War. It is the worlds's largest aircraft carrier of the US Navy. The model kit features highly detailed mast & superstructure, and includes various deck aircraft and vehicles, and a display stand with nameplate. Model length 15.8 inches. Glue and paint are required for assembly, and are sold separately.
This famous WWII M3 Grant medium battle tank was a result of crisis management and no tank in history went from design to production faster. The Grant was the British version of the M3 tank which then became known as the M3 Lee. The main difference between the two was the top turret. Academy has added new tooling to this version of the M3. The exceptionally molded hull is loaded with rivet detail, studded along the entire body, and the early version of the VVSS (Vertical Volute Spring Suspension) is a joy to behold. Side armor skirts, and the famous lower/wider 37mm Grant turret are spot on, and the modeler has a choice of assembling a long or short barreled 75mm gun. Build the kit with hatched closed of open to reveal amazing, minute features. The interior detail is almost too real, including a rack of individual, 75mm artillery rounds. The beautifully molded one-piece flexible track and crisp, accurate decals add to the impressiveness of this new release.
