Drakengard 2 takes place 18 years since the world-shattering events of the original game. The Unionhas once again appeared, in the guise of a group known as the Knights of the Seal. It appears that the world has found peace, but it is a deceptive peace. Behind the scenes, thousands of powerless people are trampled in the name of the Seal. Join a young hero named Nowe as he bonds with his dragon and faces a threat that can destroy the world! The bond with the dragon, the loyalty of friends and the love of those who need protection all come together in a gripping tale

Was this sequel necessary?
I confess - I never played Drakengard. It seemed interesting enough, with a character wiping out loads of monsters DW3-like, and occasionally flying on a dragon to - wipe more monsters out. Ultimately, though, my lack of fiscal security kept me from purchasing the game.

However, it's 2006, and I have a high-paying job as a professor! Now, I have disposable income coming out my ears! So, enter Drakengard 2. And after playing it for a couple of days, I am left to wonder - why all the hubbub? The sequel is bad-to-mediocre, so either the original was great and they're milking the cash cow, or the original was just as bad and they're...milking the cash cow?

The fact is, this game is clunky, with controls that just plain stink. Thankfully, none of that matters, as the monsters fall easy enough, but with the incredible number of games in this genre out there (I can think of about 10 Dynasty Warrior titles, e.g.), you'd think they would do a better job. Plot? Not much to talk about here - you pretty much can get the gist of it from the back of the box. Action? Quite a bit, but it's really boring (IMHO)...

This game might have been OK had I got it for $19.99, but at the price it's going for, save your money.

So boring
Just giving people a warning here. This game is very dull. The voice acting is poor, the dialogue is juvenile, and you can complete the game using a couple of buttons (just keep trying to hit something, maybe move around a little and eventually you'll kill it). Also, I have no idea why it is rated M. I wasn't looking for a gore fest or anything like that but this game would really be ok for a 12 year old (or younger) to play. Don't waste your money, please.

Drakan: Ancients' Gates - Classic PS2 game
*Drakan: The Ancients' Gates - Review

Drakan presents the game where you play as 'Rynn', the sword-wielding woman, and 'Arokh', her dragon companion, who go on a quest to open the four gateways to awaken the Dragon Mother. Rynn explores on foot and in mid-air with her dragon companion 'Arokh'.

Off the bat, the first thing I noticed that was different about this game was the huge, expansive areas that are at your disposel to explore. For instance, when I was exploring in the Shadowmire (a large, underground swamp in aforest with enemies called "Troqs"), with 'Rynn I was exploring the northern area of the swamp and found a cave that I explored and fought "troqs" in for nearly 3 hours before I came back to the beginning area of the swamp. The caves in this game are really well-done and I really enjoy exploring.

**Gameplay: 10/10 Drakan: TAG has AMAZING gameplay.

While you're playing with 'Rynn', you can explore anything in the world and go just about anywhere where you have walking distance. It really is very fun gameplay and it never gets old or boring because when you do encounter enemies it's always in different surroundings and you can perform different techniques to block the enemies attacks. I love the "jump" and "roll" techniques that Rynn can do in this game. It really comes in handy when you have a huge sword-bearing goblin come out of nowhere and can kill you in three hits.

Another thing that I love about Drakan is the fact that it actually presents a challenge and you must use your surroundings to your advantage. Being able to explore any area at any time without the linear storyline is such a sigh a relief. Another thing that I forgot to mention is you can have Rynn actually ride on the back of her dragon, Arokh, and can fight enemies in mid-air that are targeting you from the ground or you can have Arokh fight flying enemies! It really is awesome and just the fact that you can fight in mid-air and land Arokh anywhere in the world that you wish to just go and explore caves, forests, etc. is great because each area is unique in its own way.

**Sounds: 10/10

First off, the sounds in this game are very well done. There are sometimes overworld themes that are very nice and then there are ambient sounds coupled with natural sounds such as water, monster grunting, and the like. For example, when I was exploring the Mushroom Caves, there were times when all I heard was the soothing sound of a calm rush of water and there were times when I heard a dark, mysterious background noise coupled with very disturbing monster sounds. It really is stunning!

**Re-playability: 10/10

This game has very good replayability because you can explore certain areas at any given time during gameplay without any hinderence of invisible walls, cutoffs, etc. Despite it's more linear storyline, there is still a huge amount of freedom in this game and it's very refreshing.

**Overall: 10/10 - Overall, this is a fantastic game and I have so much fun playing. This game has a good story behind it so it's the best of both worlds, and I would recommend anyone who likes fantasy games where you just get to explore and fight monsters to purchase this game! You won't be disappointed.

Nano Breaker

Amazon.com

I rolled my eyes so much throughout the course of this miserable release that I should probably be fitted for contact lenses. Video games should never deliver the feeling that someone has run over your puppy with atruck. Thanks to Nano Breaker, I now know what that feels like. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence creator Koji Igarashi can be applauded for the conceptual idea of allowing players to customize their combos and build longer, more complex strings as the game progresses. At the same time, however, you have to wonder how a game that is riddled with so many flaws actually made it off of the development floor.

Even the thickest fogging that video games can provide can't hide the fact that the level designs are atrocious, the texturing resembles the smear on a baby's dirty diaper, and the Liquid (blood) effects that gush like geysers from enemies are just too ridiculous to be taken seriously. As painful as it is to look at, playing this game is like running naked through a thorn-infested briar. Not only will you find yourself combating the same foes for hours on end, the boss battles demand exhaustively repetitive techniques, the platforming exercises are incredibly sloppy, checkpoints are too infrequent, and you'll even have to endure some of the most asinine box puzzles to date.

Descending to the bottom of the video game barrel, then busting through it and plummeting at great speeds toward Hell, Nano Breaker also falters in epic ways in the storytelling department. So let me get this straight, the government is working on top secret nanotechnology on Nanotechnology Island. This is really the setting of the game? You gotta be kidding me!

The combo system is definitely cool, and the controls are fashioned nicely, but the remainder of the game is just downright appalling.

Concept:
Customize your own combos in this mindless and poorly designed hack n' slash

Graphics:
Vast amounts of fog blanket the ugly texturing and bland level designs…but not enough. This game needs more fog!

Sound:
Decent, but quickly drowned out by your angst-filled agony

Playability:
Stringing together combos is enjoyable, but every other action leads to frustration

Entertainment:
Even the Stink Monster would think this game reeks. Misery on a disc

Replay:
Low

Rated: 5 out of 10
Editor: Andrew Reiner
Issue: March 2005

2nd Opinion:
Nano Breaker does two things right: the main character has a pretty neat selection of hack n' slash moves, and some of the FMV cutscenes look very good. Everything else sucks as hard as Star Jones inhaling a plate of hot dogs. Horrid level designs, boss battles that are as tedious as they are frustrating, and an inexcusable degree of fogging combine to form yet another generic, boring action title. Don't even get me started about the terrible platforming.

Rated: 5 out of 10

"Nano-Vania"
Produced by the man behind "Castlevania: Lament of Innocence," "Nano Breaker" successfully takes that game's formula and carries it over into more absurd science fiction territory, complete with all of its parent game's problems and a few extra ones as well.

The story is more of the usual anime-style fluff that you're probably well accustomed to. It involves a cyborg named Jake, a rival cyborg called Keith, a crazy old scientist and his hot blonde of a daughter, genetic engineering, and military corruption - the usual, in other words, but done with less charm than other stories of this ilk. If the plotline is a deal-breaker, then consider this one broken. It's completely predictable in every way and lacks interesting characters that might have rescued it from mediocrity. At least the rendered cut-scenes are of splendid quality, and here and there offer some entertainment value (primarily the gory opening and the amusing but tonally inconsistent finale). At any rate, the catastrophe that forces you to kill countless monsters is your basic "Resident Evil" with nanomachines (instead of the usual viruses and plagues), and that's as creative as this one gets.

The game itself, however, does offer some repetitive fun of the hack-and-slash variety. Jake is armed with a powerful, shape-shifting plasma blade that, while generally in the guise of a broad sword, can, with the appropriate combos, transform into a scythe, an axe, or even a whip-like extension that can jerk enemies into the fray. Only the whip is ever truly useful, however, as attempting the more complex combos in the thick of things can lead to certain death - swift strokes or thrusts with the sword get the job done. Although the game hopes to encourage the player to really go full-bore with these combos (even allowing a combo upgrade system), it's never necessary to do so, and is sometimes even detrimental.

Fortunately, the combat is relatively fun, if not overly complex. Much of this is owed to the copious amounts of blood that gush from wounded and slain monsters, making the red geysers in "Kill Bill" seem realistic by comparison. Control over Jake is sharp and responsive, and it can be cathartic to hack your enemies to bits. Of course, at several points in the game you don't even have to do this, as you can simply run past your slow, dim-witted opponents and make for the next corridor or room without a backward glance. This was also true in "Lament of Innocence," and it's an inherent flaw in both games' design. There are points where melee is unavoidable thanks to barriers that dissipate only when all the area's monsters have been slain, but these circumstances are fewer and further between.

In "Lament of Innocence," lots of needless backtracking and enemy respawning crept up to detract from the experience, and these issues remain in "Nano Breaker," and, in fact, are amplified. The layout of the game is far more confusing than in the aforementioned, and there are several points where you'll have to run from point A all the way to point B without encountering anything new that wasn't there the first time - a recipe for tedium, as always.

"Nano Breaker" is, in a word, unremarkable. There's absolutely nothing about its design or presentation that makes it stand out (save perhaps the gallons of blood). Still, the hacking and slashing and overall goofiness of the concept keep it more entertaining than it probably should be, and there are the usual impressive Konami bosses to break things up and keep the game challenging - but can it be recommended wholeheartedly? Like "Lament of Innocence," absolutely not.

Very addictive - it is in your remit to collect powers with which to go against your adversary and enemy.
Travel various stunning locations upgrading your powers and abilities until your 'legion' is respectfully motivated to kick arse.
Not everyones favourite game but I found the game easy to play and the upgrades easy to follow.
Made it through a second time for alternate end - I got two weeks out of it - with this I am impressed.
Stylish if not long enough.

Almost like playing an anime...
This game is pretty good and original on SQUARE-ENIX's part. Sure, the time system can get annoying, but check out all of the stuff to do. Over 100 characters to recruit, pretty good graphics, and more. It also has an extremely large amount of voices done, basically every NPC has a voice.

If you want a fun RPG, this would be a good one toget.
