Appropriate and useful spelling program This book includes spelling lists and practice sheets for a very good spelling program. If you're like me, and your reading series does not address spelling appropriately (or at all),then you'll find this book very useful. The spelling words are very appropriate for first grade. (There's also editions for the other grades.) For example the first spelling unit is the words: a, an, and, am, and at. My class is doing very well with this program, and it's easy for me, too. Everything is provided in reproducibles.

Great Homeschooling Resource I bought this for a Plants unit for my homeschooled children (K and 2nd). It really worked well for us, bringing interesting experiments, high-interest information, and easy-to-follow directions (a must for the busy homeschooling mom!) The children get to see first-hand what the inside of a seed looks like, the parts of plants, and many other things.
I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of turning this book into a science unit for our homeschool as well as the interesting activities within. Too many "made-for-school" lesson plans seem to be watered down, boring, or difficult to pull of in your kitchen or living room with multi-aged children. This one, however, meets with my approval, and I am looking forward to using other books in this series.
Committed to the belief that children become good writers by writing -- and that they are more likely to write about things they understand and enjoy -- this book gives students lots of fun, familiar topics to choose from. It is a comprehensive writing resource organized into 12 monthly sections, exploring topics pertinent to each month, and its associated season, holidays, birthdays, and more.
Each section includes: * "Quickwrites" - a writing calendar containing twenty-five topics meant to be used for short, daily writing practice periods - a total of 300 topics * story starters and titles, appropriate to the month, that can be used for longer and more formal writing experiences - 209 in the book * reproducible forms representing a variety of writing experiences - from expanding vocabulary and listening to the sounds of language, to letter writing, list making, and much more - 151 forms in all
Just a few examples of the wealth of suggested writing topics include: I Learned It from My Grandparents, Happy Birthday Jesse Owens, The Witch's Grocery List, October Bumper Sticker, Loy Kathrong (Thai hoiday), Celebrating Cartoon Characters, Peace and Goodwill, the First Day of Winter, Happy Birthday Elvis Presley, If I Were a Snowlake, A Chinese New Year Celebration, A Conversation with Mr. Lincoln, My Kite, The Giant Leprechaun, Hopping Along the Bunny Trail, Chinese Fortune Eggs, Mud, Memorial Day, If I Were a Father, Baseball Basics, To Honor Beatrix Potter, A Sunflower Seed, Popcorn Festival, and Klondike Stampede.
Teacher resource pages (providing information and suggestions) address the writing process, writing folders and conferences, and response groups. Index included. Cute, lively line art illustrations throughout. All 176 pages perforated for easy removal.

Giant - Write Everyday Excellent resource for any parent, teacher or guardian aiming to effectively guide their children to better writing skills. THat the book has 12 sections - one for each month of the year, is a great way to get kids to practise writing and come to love it.
Writing stories, essays, narratives etc can be a daunting task for many children. This book serves to remove that fear barrier as well as banish that "Do-I-have-to-write-when-I-can-be-playing-somethingelse" attitude. With interesting and many different story starters and ideas, children are allowed free rein of their imagination which will manifest in their writings.
Writing has to be practised frequently to get better. No better way for children to pick up this skill and improve than by using this book.

Good for supplement This book would be good for supplemental material. However, I would recommend getting the digital addition of this book. Otherwise, you will be doing a lot of copying as there are a lot of cut and paste pages directly on the backside of another page.
