State of Emergency
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
Lowest Price we can find: $0.50

Amazon.com ReviewThe publishers of Grand Theft Auto III are back with another game geared towards a mature audience. But fans of GTA III should note that while State of Emergency contains adult themes and extremely violent gameplay, that's pretty much where the similarities end. Whereas GTA III was about creating a deep experience unlike any other video game, SOE is a throwback to arcade beat-'em-ups like Smash TV and Double Dragon. However, the game takes the genre to a new level with mind-blowing graphics.

In State of Emergency, you play as one of five selectable characters that's going up against the Corporation--a tyrannical group that has the city in an iron grip. The city is in a state of disarray and the citizens are rebelling. Amazingly, up to 250 characters can riot onscreen at once. It's shocking that the developers were able to render so many moving characters while keeping a smooth frame rate. Basic gameplay consists of picking up numerous weapons and objects to cause as much damage as humanly possible. Providing context to the mindless violence are the revolution and chaos modes. The former is the game's story mode and features more than 175 missions, while the latter is a single-session mode with a few variations.

For the most part, the game is an enjoyable cacophony of senseless violence, but there are some flaws. Although the revolution mode boasts an impressive number of missions, they do get repetitive. The game screams for a multiplayer mode, but it's strictly one player. In spite of these flaws, the game remains addictive and fun. It bears repeating that gamers looking for another GTA III will not find it here: this game provides an arcadelike experience that's excellent, but in a very different way. Parents should note that this game carries a Mature rating for its blood, violence, and gore. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Amazing number of characters onscreen simultaneously
  • Simple beat-'em-up gameplay
  • A vast arsenal with which to inflict damage
Cons:
  • Missions get repetitive
  • No multiplayer mode
  • Bland soundtrack

Extremely Repetitive
State of Emergency was released the spring after Grand Theft Auto III became a national obsession. Published by the same company (Rockstar - but developed by now out-of-business developer VIS) the game successfully cashed-in on Grand Theft Auto's success. Featuring similar ultra-violent, mission based gameplay, State of Emergency actually plays nothing like GTA.
The game takes place during massive riots, (the game's claim to fame being the more than one hundred characters on screen at once), and you play as one of a number of characters rebelling against The Corporation. There are three levels each featuring about fifty missions to complete amidst the chaos. Trouble is, the missions are all mindless and repetitive, and are virtually all just a slight variation on a basic formula: you'll either be sent to kill a target, sent to protect a target and/or escort him or her somewhere else, or you'll be sent to destroy a building, car, or area. The missions are fun for a short while, but once you realize you're just performing the same task over and over again, it quickly grows tired.
Some of the minigames are fun, however, and rather than being mission based, they are generally based on time and points - you'llkill people or destroy property while collecting extra time from downed enemies while racing against the clock, and you'll keep coming back for more trying to beat your best score.
The gameplay, however, is still simple and boring; just a 3-D beat-em-up, with a few attack buttons and a handful of weapons to wield (though the ability to pick up some smaller objects floating around each level, like benches, is a welcome feature). And yes, it is an ultraviolent game, despite the cartoonish visuals. Blood sprays realistically as you fire in to crowds, taking down innocent civilians; pink blobs (guts) pop out when people are shot, limbs and heads come off (you can wield them as weapons, in fact)... it's all mindless and gimmicky.
Sure, it's really cheap these days, and if you're really interetsed I'd say go for it, but it really isn't even worth a rental.

A Wide-open LA Like You've Never Imagined
Midnight Club Los Angeles drops players into a painstakingly recreated version of world-famous Tinseltown. Broken down into five distinct open-world gameplay areas, linked on the game map, cumulatively these areas comprise a massive area, much larger than anything ever seen in previous Midnight Club releases and possibly larger than any existing racer to date. Within these areas, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Mulholland Drive and Downtown LA, players are free to engage in mission play driving them to attain and customize a wide range of authentic world-class street racing vehicles, or to simply explore the city, taking on all comers in a variety of race types as they wish. Regardless, along the way they will experience not only the visual realism of the iconic boulevards, freeways, and landmarks made famous in TV and movies, but also the realism of the living breathing LA urban experience. Here traffic backs up then clears as people go to and leave work for the day, weather systems come and go and day turns to night, then back again. All the while the race goes on. It's all part of the living, breathing LA. It's all part of the Midnight Club.

The Cars
Midnight Club: Los Angeles will feature an astounding selection of vehicles in the Muscle Car, Exotics, Tuners, Motorcycle and Luxury car categories. At the time of publishing only a fraction of the total list has been announced, but a good sampling of what players can expect at launch can be seen below. Click the links in each category to see screen shots of the cars:

Muscle Cars
   Saleen S302 Extreme
   Chevrolet Corvette Z06
   Dodge Challenger Concept Car
Bikes
   Kawasaki Ninja ZX14
Exotics
   Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster
   Ford GT
   Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder
Tuners
   Volkswagen R32
   Pontiac Solstice
   1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX

Extreme Customization
Midnight Club Los Angeles continues the tradition of offering some of the deepest vehicle customization you will find in any video game. The hottest licensed cars and bikes in the world are at your disposal - kit them out, supe them up, and personalize them down to the last detail to make them all your own. Visit the Club's in-game garages located in Hollywood and Santa Monica and let your imagination run wild - tweaking and fine tuning through the following three different types of vehicle modifications:

Performance & Handling - To become a street legend, you're going to have to tune your vehicle for maximum performance. The garage offers three levels of upgrades for virtually every component on your vehicle, but it's up to you to craft the winning combination that will give you the edge on the competition.

Exterior - For the Midnight Club, stunting is a habit and its clandestine Los Angeles garages have all the toys needed to ensure heads turn in this jaded town. From making sure your car is dripping in candy paint, to adding unique body kits and jaw dropping extras, the garage offers practically limitless possibilities to personalize your vehicle with aftermarket accessories and customizable options.

Interior - Don't embarrass yourself by pulling up with an outrageously kitted-up car that has a 'me-too' factory interior. Not a good look! You're going to be spending a lot of time behind the wheel, so renovate and make yourself feel comfortable.

Beware or Befriend the Local Competition
The street racing scene of Midnight Club is tough, but tight, meaning that everyone that you meet in expansive Los Angeles could just as easily be an ally as an enemy. One thing is for certain though, they are all willing to throw down at the drop of a hat. Just a few of the faces you'll encounter out on the streets are:
NPC Karol from 'Midnight Club: Los Angeles' Karol, Age 45 - A veteran of Moscow's underground street racing circuit, Karol moved to LA in the 1990's after the collapse of the Soviet Union. If you're looking for cars, he's your man. He owns two successful garages and claims to be able to get hold of any vehicle, no questions asked. He also sees himself as a philosopher and will bend your ear if you left him. He mostly races around Hollywood and the Beaches and his rides include a 1975 Datsun 280Z, 1969 Boss Mustang 302, 2006 Dodge Challenger and a 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV.
NPC Annie from 'Midnight Club: Los Angeles' Annie, Age 31 - Annie has a rep as one of the fiercest drivers in the city. She detests posers and wannabes, is intelligent and sharp-tongued and pulls no punches when it comes to cutting the competition down to size. She has been spotted in everything from a 1983 VW Golf GTI, 2006 Pontiac Solstice, 2008 Chrysler 300C SRT-8, 2008 Audi RS4 and a 2004 Ford Shelby Cobra Concept and can usually be found hanging out near Pink's Hotdog Stand in Hollywood along with her crew.

Better than NFS Undercover!
I have to say this game is very entertaining, I found myself having the fun that I was expecting from undercover. I think one of the main options that stood out in this game for me was that the customization was player friendly. You have a vast majority of cars to choose from, and a fun kicker for me was that you could test drive cars before you had to buy them! The graphics in this game a very smooth; when I found out that rockstar used the same engine that they used from GTA, I realize why I was enjoying it so much. This game has a way better story line than undercover, and the cop chases feel more realistic than that of undercover. I enjoyed the inside the car camera view, and the ablility to customize the interior of your ride.

Many people have posed complaints of the AI racers in the game of having supernatural driving abilities, i.e. being too hard. But it just adds the intensity of the game, it's a blast riding at high speeds, dodging in and out of traffic, and driving through lawns and so on. This game definitely does not dissapoint; also the way the camera zooms out to view the whole map whenever you start a race was a very nice touch by rockstar.

If you were dissapointed by undercover as I was, pick up midnight club, for rockstar stood true to what gamers really expect from next gen video games.

crap!
this game is not really a good game. besides the graphics and the cars. this game sucks. this game will get you mad! what will happen is that your in the lead for 3 laps, and you go around the corner to finish the race as 1st, then BOOM. a car comes outta nowhere arond a corner, you spin out then you come in last. another thing that sucks is that you can tap a car while ina race and that will put you in last. dont get me wring the cars- 10*, the graphics= 10*, the customization 9*, but the racing sucks. if you have game rage, STAY AWAY

Life at the academy
The story follows Jimmy Hopkins, a teenager who's been expelled from every school he's ever attended. Left to fend for himself after his mother abandons him at Bullworth to go on her fifth honeymoon, Jimmy has a whole year at Bullworth ahead of him, working his way up the social ladder of this demented institution of supposed learning, standing up for what he thinks is right and taking on the liars, cheats and snobs who are the most popular members of the student body and faculty. If Jimmy can survive the school year and outsmart his rivals, he could rule the school.

Using the "living sandbox" game style similar to Rockstar's previous titles, players complete goals and experiment with items in the game world. A rival may dare youto drop a firecracker into a toilet or scare some sense into the kid who took your lunch money. Don't spend too much time roaming the halls, however, as you may actually be punished for skipping out on important classes. Choices you make outside of school will also impact how friends and foes in the school view you after you buy new clothes and sport a new haircut.

Mini games abound
Bullworth Academy pride themselves in rigidly sticking to the curriculum at all times, to this end consistent truancy will result in punishment. The esteemed staffof the Academy, though occasionally questionable in their recreational habits, ensure that the pupils have a firm grounding in the key academic subjects. Alongside the strict principals of loyalty, trust and ruthless ambition that are ingrained in every pupil in the academy by the principal Dr Crabblesnitch, core subjects include English, Gym, Shop Class, Photography, Art and Chemistry. Each subject comprises a series of five tests to be passed with flying colors. Of course on passing each test a due reward, in the form of gameplay features will be earned by the player. Bullworth Academy's educational system is provided through a host of exciting and innovative mini games lovingly developed by Rockstar Vancouver to accompany the main storyline of Bully.

Do a double clique
Just like any other crumbling prep school, Bullworth Academy has its cliques. You'll have to choose whether to side with football jocks, well-dressed preppies, or try to turn them against each other while you laugh at the antics with your fellow greasers. Clique membership becomes even more exciting as your clique rises to the head of the class- making a name forthemselves and striking fear into the hearts of those who might cross you. Don't be surprised if some cliques offer up some surprises, as those bug-eyed nerds just may have the scientific know how to create weaponry that can keep those bullies at bay.

Ready yourself for a hilarious return to campus living with Bully, the outrageously funny debut title from Rockstar Vancouver, available exclusively for PlayStation2 computer entertainment system.

The Warriors
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
Lowest Price we can find: $49.99

The Warriors brings you the drama of the cult film. When gang leader Cyrus called a summit for every gang in New York, he asked them to unite into one massive army -- under his command, they'd be strong enough to take over the city. The gang kids seemed ready to sign up, until Cyrus was shot by a rival. It's pinned on "The Warriors" -- a small-time gang from the edge of the city. Blamed for a murder they didn't commit, The Warriors have to get from the Bronxto their home turf in Coney Island, with every gang in New York chasing them. Help them fight their way through all the gangs they meet -- and get them home in one piece without getting grabbed by the cops.

If you come out to play-ay, you'll go back in pretty soon
The Warriors game is a good movie based game, but I feel like the product shows that the developers thought that The Warriors didn't have enough content to make a good game.
There are 18 missions that take place before the movie's timeline. The movie itself: 5 levels. That is, the movie is 20% of the game missions. I do think it is nice that they gave the backstory for every Warrior, but it is a bit much. Also the backstories have almost no relation to themovie part of the game. As I was playing the earlier parts of the game I assumed that you were visiting locations that you later would have to trek through. Actually they have no relation whatsoever to the movie part.
The game is also shockingly linear. Rockstar has a pedigree for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy style sandbox games, but this game is NOT by the GTA Rockstar, this is Rockstar Toronto. They also made the PS2 Max Payne game and Manhunt 2 for Wii. (Rockstar North in Scotland makes the GTA series.)
The controls are simple: kick, punch, & jump. You can also pick up knives, bottles, or other items to use as weapons. While playing this game I was constantly reminded of brawlers like Final Fight or Double Dragon (NES). Just like those games you can play the entire game co-operatively. The minigame "Armies of the Night" that you get after beating the game is a Warriors spin on those side scrolling type of games.
The soundtrack is top notch, and many of the voices of the movie return for the game including Ajax, Swan, Cleon, Cochise, & Mercy. Some of the new replacement voices are so good that I didn't notice that it was different people until the credits.
Ultimately this is a good game, but to hear that Rockstar was involved after Grand Theft Auto San Andreas had gang fighting, will probably make you expect a different game. Unlike GTA:SA you will not have turf battles and you can't take a rival gang's territory. Also the game does not have a GTA style overworld that you can explore. Each level is an isolated piece of the city with straight-as-an-arrow linear action.
If you were expecting GTA: The Warriors, you will be disappointed. If you were expecting Double Dragon: The Warriors, then you will be quite pleased.

Not Quite The Game I Expected
Having played some of GTA IV and not wanting to have so much questionable material around my wife and 2 boys, I thought I'd give this game a try in the hopes that it would be fun yet appropriate for all ages. Developer Rockstar did create a city within which you can travel and explore, as well as interact with different characters. I loved the different personalities you come across during your time in school. The voice work for the game is superb, and the writing is very clever. The graphics are pretty good for a game that was originally released on PS2, and I had a great time with the mini-games that occur whenever you actually go to class.

What kept this game from being great fun to play was the amount of repetition in the game play. Each mission had me running around the map to aquire or deliver some item with different bullies or nerds getting in my way as I went. This broke down into fighting with whomever was in my way prior to completing the mission, and then avoiding the school proctors or law enforcement on my way back to the "safe house". There were a few missions that deviated from this theme, but for the most part, it seemed pretty repetitive.

If it's one of the few games you own, you'll probably get quite a bit of gameplay out of it as there are lots of little details to experience in your time around town and in school. However, if you don't like a lot of repetition, and you own several other games that are seeking your time, this one might end up just being a 10 hour diversion.

In Mafia, you've been accepted into the ruthless Salieri crime family, and your goal is to rise to the top!

What can you do while you wait for the game to load? Make a sandwich!
My buddy and I were bored as hell one night, and I had let him borrow this game and we both agreed the load times kill this game. We wanted to see if we could make a sandwich in the time it took to load a level. I finished one and got almost halfway through making another one when the game started up again. Thestory however is pretty good, well a lot better than what I had expected. Driving sucks!!! The manufacturers were probably trying to make it a little more realistic than the successful GTA games, however it just got really annoying when you get pulled over for speeding. Some levels get pretty hard, especially the ones where you have to chase someone in a car. Combat also had it's minor flaws. I would buy a cheap used copy of this and play it for its storyline and decent gameplay.
