KING OF FIGHTERS ’94

KING OF FIGHTERS ’94

SNK ARCADE CLASSICS: VOLUME 1 will include the following SNK games:

  • ART OF FIGHTING – The first game in SNK’s second fighting-game franchise, set in the same universe as FATAL FURY. It was the first fighting game by SNK to feature the character designs of former SNK illustrator Shinkiro, who would go on to do the character designs for the later Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters games.
  • BASEBALL STARS 2 – The sequel to SNK’s popular baseball arcade game. Players can create leagues of up to 125 games (6 teams playing each other 25 times) and view statisticssuch as League Standings, Average, Home Runs, Runs Batted In, Earned Run Average, Wins and Saves. Players can fire players and upgrade them using the same 15-point system introduced in the original Baseball Stars.
  • BURNING FIGHT – New York detectives battle organized crime in this fighter. Duke and Billy, two popular and renowned New York City Police detectives, are hot on the trail of a dangerous Japanese crime syndicate. Their investigation has led them to the mean streets of Japan where they meet a police officer and martial arts expert named Ryu. Ryu agrees to join the NYPD detectives as they track down the crime syndicate bosses and end their reign of terror once and for all.
  • FATAL FURY – First released in 1991, FATAL FURY introduced the two-plane fighting system. The main fighting game feature that the original Fatal Fury was known for was the two-plane system. Characters would fight from two different planes, and by stepping between the planes, attacks could be dodged with ease.
  • KING OF FIGHTERS ’94 – The first game in the popular KING OF FIGHTERS series. King of Fighters '94 introduces the series' signature 3-man team system. Instead of a simple one-on-one, two round fight system, a player chooses a team of three characters, then determines the order to play them in. Each fight consists of up to 5 rounds, and each round ends when one of the two fighters is knocked out; the remaining fighter stays and faces the opponent's next character. A fight is won when one of the two players loses the last of their three fighters.
  • KING OF THE MONSTERS – In KING OF THE MONSTERS, giant monsters fight for power in epic battles. Players get to choose any one of six monsters (four in the ports) for battle, and two players can join forces to fight the monsters together. Battles end when one of the monsters is pinned for a three count or if time expires (in which case the player loses).
  • LAST RESORT – A challenging futuristic shooter. The gameplay was heavily inspired by R-Type and its system of pod attached to the player's ship. Its first level remained memorable for its homage to the futuristic Neo-Tokyo depicted in the anime Akira.
  • MAGICIAN LORD – Players help the wizard Elta save his homeworld in this platformer. The player controls the wizard Elta, the last magician lord, on his quest to save his homeland from the evil Gul-Agieze who plans to resurrect the god of destruction using eight tomes of mystical power. As Elta the player must battle through eight levels to find each of the tomes before he can reach the final battle and seal away the evil god once again.
  • METAL SLUG – This run-and-gun side-scroller was the first in the popular series. It’s widely known for its sense of humor, extremely fluid hand-drawn animation, and fast paced two-player action.
  • NEO TURF MASTERS – A golf game which debuted on the Neo Geo Pocket Color in 1999. The game included a VS mode and three single player modes, as well as having six players to choose from. You played in one of three countries, USA, Japan and Germany.
  • SAMURAI SHODOWN – Set in the 18th century, SAMURAI SHODOWN features bladed-weapon combat and an international cast of characters.
  • SENGOKU – In SENGOKU, players face off against undead feudal Japanese armies.
  • SHOCK TROOPERS – In this run-and-gun adventure, players save a scientist and his granddaughter from the Bloody Scorpions.
  • SUPER SIDEKICKS 3 – A soccer game featuring teams from all over the world.
  • TOP HUNTER – Bounty huntersprotect colonists from space pirates in this futuristic action game.
  • WORLD HEROES – This classic fighter pits players against historical figures in a tournament enabled by time travel.

"With 16 of our most beloved games, SNK ARCADE CLASSICS: VOLUME 1 is a must-have addition to any arcade fan’s collection," said Ben Herman, president of SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION. "It’s the most comprehensive SNK compilation to date."

Arcade and Home System Classis
Very good and somewhat nostalgic collection of games collected for the PS2. For the most part you get unlimited continues with each game and three levels of difficulty which I have yet to look into adjusting. I bought it for the nostalgia and to have some interesting games for my PS2 since I have not yet been convinced to buy a PS3. For the purposes I bought it for it has sufficed admirably. Although a secondary reason is still aways off as I intend to give my nephew an education in video game history when he gets old enough to play these games.

Great Collection - Eagerly Awaiting Vol. 2
While the goal here seemed to be to represent SNK's past hits, rather than those that have aged well, this is a nice compilation. The graphics are good, everything controls well (unless you have an original model PSP, as the d-pad inability to perform the complex movements for special moves holds true here, and, while initial load times are quite lengthy, once a game is loaded, it rarely needs to access the disc again, except for some of the newer, more complex titles, like Metal Slug and Shock Troopers. Basically, they are the arcade games, for better or worse, which means there aren't any enhancements (aside from viewing options and the ability to save checkpoints). So the collection will live or die based on the games themselves. Some highlights:
Art of Fighting / Fatal Fury / Samurai Showdown / World Heroes / King of Fighters '94 - all are the first entries into SNK's multiple fighting series. Still good games today, but their sequels generally superior.
King of Monsters - Wrestling game with giant monsters fighting in Japan's major cities. Trashing the cities during your attempts to take down your rival is fun, but the gameplay is pretty shallow, and huge sections of the city are out of bounds, so the intact buildings sit there and taunt you.
Magician Lord - Fun, fantasy-themed platformer, which time has been surprisingly kind to.
Metal Slug - Humorous, side-scrolling shooter, inspired by Contra. Best game on the disc; a classic, though nothing has changed from the previously released Metal Slug Anthology version.
Shock Troopers - Commando rip-off. Fun, and has a nice level branching system, but not as polished as Metal Slug.
Baseball Stars 2 - The many baseball games released after this makes the flaws stand out more than ever, but considering the varying quality of many of those baseball franchises, you could do a lot worse.
Last Resort - Total rip-off of R-Type (even has similar looking enemies) down to the high difficulty, but still fun if you liked that series.

Overall, a good compilation. Many notable games were missing, such as Nam-75, Crossed Swords, Ninja Combat, Robo Army, Cyber Lip, Mutation Nation, and Super 8 Man. Also, many of these games, such as Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters, and World Heroes, have sequels that essentially add content and tweak the gameplay, rather than revamping everything, so these are already obsolete. Still, a good value, and a quality collection.

King of Fighters Collection- The Orochi Saga
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
Lowest Price we can find: $12.84

The most extensive King of Fighters Collection, The Orochi Saga contains five complete games, including the Orochi Saga trilogy ('95-'97) as well as KOF '94 and KOF '98: Dream Match Never Ends. Also featured are a variety of unlockable bonus features.

Good simply outweighs the bad
I'll keep this simple.

Cons:
-There are loading times between some matches and when switching between games. Most loading times occur when beginning each game. Then as you proceed through the game, loading times are much less noticeable. (There are no loading times between rounds, by the way. Also, KOF 94 and 95 have pretty much no more loading times after you start your first match.)

Pros:
-5 classic KOF games on one disc. KOF 94, 95, 96, 97, and 98. For those paying attention, KOF 94 and KOF 98 were bonuses specifically added to this American release. Within the fighting game community, KOF 98 is arguably the most beloved KOF game to date (hence, it's upcoming remake, KOF 98: Ultimate match).

-New challenge mode that allows for unlockable artwork and music

-Gameplay feels almost entirely intact, with only subtle differences.

-Training modes are included. The original Japanese version did not have training modes, so this is an added bonus for this release.

-Price is ridiculously difficult to beat. Especially considering the number of legendary games you get.

Bottom line: For [cheap] (chump change in today's uber-expensive gaming world) you can own 5 classic arcade hits that are otherwise impossible or VERY difficult to obtain in the United States. The loading times are a definite wound, but they're hardly a deal breaker considering the average PS2 game's loading times.

Purchasing this collection would support the 2D fighting game market, and help ensure that future SNK titles make their way to our shores. After all, KOFXII is just around the corner...

Great Second Chance To Play Neo Geo Games
I never had the chance to play the Neo Geo when I was a kid, so this collection was greatly welcomed by me. Baseball Stars 2, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, and King of the Monsters are worth the price by themselves. You can also play the games with a classic controller or GameCube controller, as well as with a Wiimote, and Wiimote plus nunchuck. I can't wait for volume 2!

SNK Playmore's Fighting Evolution
This game first caught my eye the first time I'd seen it (in early 2006, I was watching G4's "Cinematech" show & they had a couple of clips from this game; it was the japanese PS2 version).

Now that I owned it, I will say this, SNK Playmore did a good job on this game esp. if you compare this to Capcom Fighting Evolution. Many of the fighters were given much needed makeovers (unlike Capcom's game where they just recycle nearly all the fighters's sprites) & some like Robert Garica were totally madeover. We also have fighters from games that never appeared in the "King of Fighters series like the ninjas from World Heroes, & the sword fighters from Samurai Shodown & Last Blade. The Double Assaults is a great idea & should be used in all future tag-team based fighters.

As for gameplay, you can play Arcade mode where you're given 300 seconds to beat many teams as you can but only one team member needs to be KOed to go on to the next team. Every 3 teams you beat you can choose to restore your life, add more time on the clock, or fill up your power stock but once youused one, you can't pick it again. When time runs out you fight one of 4 bosses. Who you fight depends on how you did those previous 300 seconds (the one fighter down you lose rule still applies).

Then there's tag play which feels more like Marvel vs Capcom; beat both team members to go to the next team. And in Survival Challenge, you fight tag team after tag team until both your fighters gets KOed in a match.

The 3-D backgrounds are very nice. Favs are the underwater stages, the underground mine one (with the robot chasing you in the background) & the dragon stages (despite the slowdown that does happen here). The music is OK but not as rememberable as the music from SNK Playmore's (and SNK pre-2001) earier games. The highlight in the sound department are the voices (I'm a sucker for fighters with cute Japanese voices...)

And the fun factor? I actually give this game two rating here; 1 player: 3 stars; 2 players: 5 stars, thus 4 stars overall. Once you unlock the endings (which are mostly text based), the galleries & the unlockable fighters, there's not much else you can do in this game if you'replaying solo. Also, the CPU's a little easy...until you make it to any of the bosses who are very cheap. However with two players, you & a friend will be playing this game for hours on end.

PS About the load times, the Japanese & PAL versions of this game had long loading times. This is not an issue in the American version so don't let that keep you from buying this game if you're interested.

World Heroes Anthology
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
Lowest Price we can find: $11.97

World Heroes Anthology is the complete collection of one of SNK's most popular 2D fighting game series World Heroes. The titles included are: World Heroes, World Heroes 2, World Heroes Jet, and World Heroes Perfect. The collection contains 56 characters using hand-to-hand and weapons based fighting mixed with special super-human abilities enabling each character to perform special attacks. World Heroes Anthology follows the storyline of Dr. Brown, a scientist, who having perfected a time machine has organized a fighting tournament throughout all of history to see who is the best fighter of all time. True to this plot, many of the fighters are based on actual historical figures.

Unless you played these way back when...
I really love this collection. But I can view it from the perspective of when these games were top of the line products in the arcade (unfortunately has closed down by now) a block from my home. If you don't have found memories, I don't know how you could like this game since today's products clearly beat out these old "masterpieces." I remember not having enough quarters and wanting to play World Heroes 1 death match mode one more time. I remember all the characters... I'm obviously biased and this is my favorite collection. Round One FIGHT!!!!

Capcom vs SNK 2

Lowest Price we can find: $35.86

Amazon.com Capcom vs. SNK 2 unleashes lightning-fast animation and classic arcade fighting action on the PlayStation2. You can choose from more than 44 characters from the Capcom and SNK fighting universes, and customize your fighting style with even more fighting "grooves."

Capcom vs SNK 2
This game is really addictive once you start playing it. You get to play with like 40+ characters. With the "Color Edit" option, I could make Balrog look like The Hulk. It has 6 different grooves, plus you can customize it once you unlock this oprion.

While this game's gameplay is excellent, the only problems is the fact that some chracters look dated (like Morrigan and Sagat) and that all the chracters seem a bit pixely not quite as smooth as the Dreamcast version.

But the graphics aren't really what matter in this type of game, specially with cool light effects and such. Many of Capcom's characters have been balanced in oder to compete with the SNK ones (like removing some moves in certain characters and maybe weakening them)

Overall, this game is certanly worth getting!

Metal Slug Anthology is the definitive collection of the intense shooter series. Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Metal Slug by joining the Metal Slug team on 7 separate adventures that span the franchise in this definitive collection. It features aracde-perfect ports of each title in the series, for instant pick-up-and-play action.

THE BEST THERE IS!!!
For those who aren't in the know, Metal Slug is a true classic gaming franchise. I'd put it well above Contra as the best side scrolling shooter ever.

I remember when I first saw Metal Slug 1. Me and a friend of mine were at the bowling alley when we first saw and played it. It blew our minds. This game had us talking for days about how cool we thought it was. About all the cool stuff we saw and experienced while playing it. We couldn't wait to go back and play it again. It soon became our favorite game and couldn't play it enough. As time went on, I'd hear rumors of it appearing on this console or that one and I remember the feeling of wanting to do or pay anything to have it. Then the sequels came out in the arcades and I remember how fun it was to see the new versions, see the differences and have so much fun playing them. Well now they're all here.

These games are so fun and unique. The art style is so original and ineteresting (you gotta hand it to SNK for sticking with the 2D sprites in their games),there's really nothing quite like it. The idea is simple, take one or two soldiers through various stages fighting pseudo WWII German soldiers, zombies, and other various creatures. At the end of each stage are some of the funnest and most original boss battles you'll ever see. Along the way are a great variety of weapons and vehicles to use to destroy everything. Machine guns, flame throwers, shotguns, grenades, rocket launchers, tanks, planes, and submarines are just some that come to mind. The animations for the stages are great and characters are hilarious. It's violence but in such a comical and semi-realistic way. The controls are great on all of these games as well as the unique graphics and sound.

So if your new to this series and are even the slightest bit interested, feel free to jump in and try it, you will not regret it. For those of you familiar with this series at all, this is one of the easiest guaranteed no brainer buys ever. Six games on 1 disc!!! But get it while you can because like Capcom, SNK is notorious for not producing enough of each title and then they get harder to find and the price goes up and up.
