The Science of Ripping Off Parents Here's a quick primer for parents looking to buy science kits for the early grade school set (i.e., K - 3rd). Every science kit, including this one, basically tells youto mix vinegar with baking soda and "Voila!" you made a volcano. Nevermind that in later years some kid will go hiking in the crater of Mt. St. Helen's during an eruption thinking it is just harmless cooking products. Use safe chemicals to make scientific changing colors? You guessed it -- food dye. All these kits basically include a set of plastic test tubes and instructions telling you to open your kitchen cupboards. Back in the Middle Ages people who sold this kind of hokum for the price it now commands were called alchemists. They eventually went out of business. Buy the kid a Suzukie violin or a football helmet instead.
Grow your own friendly germs and fuzzy molds. Mix up a batch of coagulating fake blood. Even make a stinky intestine. learn the science behind unmentionable bodily functions while doing some truly NASTY Experiments. Ages 8+

Good Clean Fun Spa Science is probably more of a recipe than a science experiment, but is still alot of fun. Girls mix fragrances and bases into fun bath prodcuts. Some fizz and release bubbles (carbon dioxide-hense the science part). My 10 yr old dughter enjoys mixing things and creating new blends of ingredients, so this kit was right up her alley. Alot of fun for all girls. It may transfer into an interest in science, but science is not the main focus of the kit.

Great idea, poorly executed Well, cool, make a magic wand! What could be better for a school age child into fantasy books? But oh no, the ends of the wand do NOT FIT the tube, so the wand cannot be made- SO, massive disappointment for the excited child, complete annoyance for the parent! How hard would it be for the maker of this product to include pieces that actually fit together? The wand consists of 2 stoppers and a plastic tube, this is not rocket science!
The perfect science introduction for younger kids! Setup your own color mixing laboratory and turn your favorite colors in to brilliant soft crystals. Capture a rainbow in a test tube and become a color mixing detective. Ages 4+

Thanks for the Reviews Thanks to everyone's reviews, I didn't buy this. I bought the "totally Funky Science" kit. But, I did add some these project ideas from this kit. My 12yr old did the "Totally Funky Science" kit with my 5 and yr old and all three of them loved it.
Some of the materials in my kit were cheap of course. But, my kids had fun, learned and I think that is money well spent. I have wasted my money on worse things. Afterwards, I googled some science experiments, got some supplies, bought some experiment idea books and now have the kids do science experiments regularly.
The kit got us started and excited about science. =)

Good fun with a little help! My 8 year old son got this for christmas and we had a lot of fun with it! It definitely requires some adult supervision especially for the baking and the rock candy. My son had the most fun making the fizzy drinks and learning how to make soda. Although the recipe for the soda doesn't taste that great it was a lot of fun to make and he did learn all about acids and bases. The other great part of this was that these recipes are easy to recreate even if you run out of the supplies that come with the kit. The big test tubes were also fun.

5 year old Scientists!!! Great toy! I bought this for my 5 year old and he absolutely loves it! He started asking about science one day and that's what triggered me buying this. It has a couple test tubes and uses glitter and vegetable oil (make sure you have more oil on hand)with small color tablets. With these three things mixed with water, you can make things erupt, wave and glitter. It really opened his "out-of-the-box" thinking cap and he started asking other questions about the mixing products! It was a great learning experience!!
