A lot of quality and a big bang for your buck!
Well, I've been a fan of Half-Life since the first one, so when the Orange Box was released forPS3, I figured it's a must have. Now, I haven't had much playtime with it, but from what I have, it delivers. The graphics are not as good as everything else you see on the PS3 today obviously, but they are clean and sharp. Especially considering this game has been ported over from the PC. The main story reminds me of the original, but with more flare, and a next gen feel. The story unfolds as you interact with characters and complete tasks. It controls well and just feels solid all around. I didn't feel as lost as I normally would, but then again I haven't gotten very far. Even then, I've encountered some pretty heated stuff where my heart was pounding from being chase through a flight of stairs and onto a rooftop with machine gun wielding bad guys.
I did have tons of fun playing Team Fortress 2 where you get to go bananas in online multiplayer mayhem where you get to play as different classes i.e. sniper, medic, to heavy artillery guy. You can choose to organize a team of friends or just hop right into any available sessions. I still need to check out a few of the other modes like Portal and get through Episode 1 & 2, but the game definitely feels solid. I justsaw recently that the price dropped to $19.99, so this game has just become a steal!

In Half-Life, you assume the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a recently graduated theoretical physicist who must fight his way out of an underground research facility whose teleportation experimentations have gone awry. The second part of the trilogy of episodic expansions for Half-Life 2, Episode Two picks up where Episode One left off?with Gordon and Alyx traveling out of City 17 and into a vast new environment.
The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people people he cares about are counting on him. BioShock is the "genetically enhanced" first person shooter that lets you do things never before possible in the genre: turn everything into a weapon, biologically mod your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade your weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques in an incredible and unique underwater city. You are a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces, and hunted down by genetically modified ?splicers" and deadly security systems, you have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same, and no two gamers will play the game the same way. BioShock is loaded with some of greatest, most modifiable weapons to ever blast their way into a shooter. But guns alone won't be enough to defeat the devious AIs of Rapture. There are literally hundreds of other strategies players can use to take out his enemies. Here's just a few things you can do a foe: Brainwash Him to Become Your Personal BodyGuard Invent your own Ammo Types to Prey on his Vulnerabilities Turn his own Security System Against Him Light Him on Fire and Launch Heat Seeking Missiles At him Torment Him with Plagues of Insects Take Research Photos of Him to Learn his Weaknesses Send Him Flying intothe Ceiling to Knock him Senseless

come on!
I reviewed this game along time ago before I had even played it, but I only reviewed it to explain my hatred for fps games. Since then I have fallen in love with fps games and have purchased around 50 including bioshock. So far I have played through four levels and I must start by saying that this game has beautiful graphics and somewhat decent gameplay. To me though, those are the only aspects of the game worthy of a decent mention. Their are just to many annoyances in the game to be fun for along time, such as having to hack everything in the game unless you want to use a big chunk of money, which you don't usually have to begin with. Oh, and the biggest annoyance is that health packs are kind of hard to come by considering that you pretty much have to buy them, but you need to choose not to because you will start right back over anyways if you die, however you will have the same amount of ammo aswhen you died, hence the reason to buy ammo instead of health! If thats not annoying enough for you then just add on some spawning enemies to go along with the scarce ammo and health and it's a real blast! More like a shotgun blast of tedious to the face! The graphics are really good however it is the same friggin thing over and over again. Don't get me wrong, with every level there is a different room design but everything is bland looking and you see the same colors over and over. Why do this, especially on a system that has the capability of pulling off any environment one can think of. If you didn't like halo then you may like this game and vice versa, but I do not see what the hype is all about with either one of the series. I am sticking to the basic fps shooters for now on like cold winter for the ps2! At least you can blow the enemies heads off in that game!

Mass Effect

Lowest Price we can find: $9.64

Set 200 years in the future in an epic universe, Mass Effect places gamers in a vast galactic community in danger of being conquered by a legendary agent gone rogue. A spectacular new vision from legendary developers BioWare, Mass Effect challenges players to lead a squad of freedom fighters as they struggle against threatening armies to restore peace in the land. Mass Effect is the first in a trilogy of games with an overarching story, where the real conflict between organic beings and artificial intelligence comes to life in startling clarity. Intense, in-depth story where the fate of life as you know it depends on you Features six character classes, along with six more unlockable ones - each class contains several talents As each talent is leveled, the character either gains stats (extra health, stamina, etc) or unlocks new abilities. Players can fully customize their appearance, gender, abilities and even military background. Four classes of conventional weapons ESRB Rated M for Mature

Not enough actioin
Only about 30% of this game is spent in actual action situations. The other 70% is spent reading and typing, which really isn't that much fun, and that was without my ever reading the pages and pages of "Codex" material that the game keeps giving you.

Secondly, I was induced to buy Mass Effect by the promise of "the vastness of space", but the fact is that, for the most part, you pick a planet from a map and you are dropped onto it. None of the action actually takes place in space.

In addition, while the layout of buildings and land for the main missions is varied, the numerous side missions mostly use one of only a couple of different building layouts. Even the landscapes of the many different worlds are structured the same and only colored differently.

Thirdly, the graphics only rate a "B" by the standards of games like Grand Theft Auto 4 and Fallout 3. There is very little texture to the landscapes; mountaintops peak with sharply drawn straight lines, etc.

When Mass Effect finally gives you some action, it is pretty good. In fact, I put its targeting/shooting system far ahead of Fallout 3's and even better than GTA4's. The only drawback is that like the Companions in F3, the 2-man crew that you MUST take every time you leave your ship is more of a nuisance than a help early on, then they take over the game later when their powers grow.

So, 5 stars for the action and the main story line, 3 for the graphics and 1 for everything else, for an average of 3. Still not bad for half the price (or less) of current hit games.

Amazon.comPortal is an action/puzzle video game from Valve, creatorsof Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike. The winner of over 40 awards, including 15 Game of the Year honors, it is one of the most original games on any platform in years and offers gamers hours of unique gameplay. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation. Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuver objects, and themselves, through space.

The Story
Portal contains only two characters, the player-controlled Chell and GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System), a computer AI that monitors, directs and misleads Chell in a kind of twisted experiment. It's not exactly a match made in heaven

Regardless, Chell must rely on information provided by GLaDOS to survive as she navigates through a series of mostly doorless rooms using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device ("portal gun"). The portal gun creates two portal ends, one orange and the other blue. Both are simultaneously a potential entrance and exit and objects, alive or otherwise, that travel through one end will exit the other at the same speed. In addition, portals create a visual and physical connection between two different locations in 3D space. Their ends are restricted to planar surfaces, but if the portal ends are on nonparallel planes, bizarre twists in geometry and gravity can occur as the player character is immediately reoriented to be upright with respect to gravity after leaving a portal. Chell can pass through open portals at will, but barriers, known as "Material Emancipation Grids" or 'fizzlers' prevent players from carrying objects beyond them. Luckily certain objects, known as 'companion cubes' can be tossed through. Once through these can then be used as the player wishes. Passage through these fields also closes any open portals, so it's important to look before you leap. It's Chell's challenge and yours to survive the hazards of the portals, including bobby traps, hidden gun turrets and the treachery of GLaDOS in the search for eventual freedom.

Great game!
Portal is simply amazing. The characters, although really, there are only two (unless you count the companion cube =P) are very well thought out and really interesting, you'll get pulled into the story and won't want to stop until you figure out what is what. (And even by the end, there's still loose ends that make you really want more). Great game, great story, let's just hope to death that there's a SEQUEL!

ESRB Rated M for Mature

Why read a long review?
The game is worth the rent. Beautiful visuals, decent storyline, fun combat, very repetitive. Great idea to run up walls and reach very high points but not worth the continuing side quests.

Game developer Bungie announced that Halo 3 will be released for Microsoft's Xbox 360 sometime in 2007. The game was revealed to the world at the Microsoft press conference held at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA in May 2006. To gamer's delight, the announcement was a complete surprise. The rumors have been abound for the past year, as everyone wondered when the next installment would be ready. Bungie and Microsoft did a stellar job keeping their lips sealed, and fans benefited from their first glimpse of the hallowed third and final installment.

The short presentation was delivered in real-time on the Xbox 360 using the current version of the Halo 3 game engine. That's right, no studio production video, Bungie and Microsoft delivered the real deal: what they showed at the announcement is what gamers will see when they play Halo 3 in 2007. The HDR lighting, self-shadowing, GPU-run particle system and many other effects are rumored to show up in full effect in the final game. Needless to say, the gaming community is salivating.

CJ Cowan, Bungie's director of cinematics discussed one of the most startling moments of the presentation: the return of Cortana. "Given the variety of character and story arcs at the end of Halo 2, we wanted to boil down our announcement to a few key threads. Cortana and the Chief being a galaxy apart is a situation we haven't seen before, and is something that is a powerful component to Halo 3. We are using her transmissions in the demo to give the viewer a few subtle clues to her situation and state of mind, without revealing any specifics we want to save for the game itself."

Graphically, the game closely follows in the tradition of Halo 2, although it has been upgraded to take advantage of the Xbox 360's more prodigious visual abilities. As art direct Marcus Lehto explained, "[The presentation] was intended to bean understated announcement of Halo 3 -- the tone is that of mystery and suspense -- the calm before the storm. I wanted to make sure that we reintroduced the Chief, showed that Earth was thoroughly conquered, with Covenant everywhere, and that there is a glorious, ancient artifact buried under the Earth's crust which will provide Halo 3 with the epic journey which we all want."

Taking full advantage of the power of Xbox 360, Halo 3 expands on everything that has made the franchise great, adding a wealth of technical and gameplay advancements. The game design has evolved with next-generation, high-definition visuals, enhanced A.I., an advanced real-time lighting engine, and, of course, new weapons, characters, and challenges. Halo 3 promises an unparalleled first-person shooter experience and, in the end, the most compelling and engrossing story in the franchise's history. Last, but certainly not least, Halo 3 builds upon the unique social multiplayer experience and innovative, evolving online gameplay of Halo 2. Rest assured, you'll still be able to run with your clan and battle with (or against) your buddies from coast to coast.

Halo Forever! Continued
Microsoft has done it again! Another great game for a great console. Out of all the Halos I'd say that Halo 3 is the best. The levels are so freakin awesome! So is the allies, weapons, enemies, etc. etc. There are so many cool weapons and vehicles. For instance, they made another warthog that can hold 5 or 6 marines (they can all shot from it as well!). Also they made a new weapon that can shoot laser and kill a brute in 1 shot! Plus the weapons in Halo and Halo 2 got better. The sub-machine gun in Halo 2 wasaweful. When you shot it the weapon started to go up and it wasn't very powerful. Now in Halo 3, when you shoot it, it stays concentrated on your enemy and is alot more powerful. That's all I'm going to tell you. You'll just have to buy it and see what it is like yourself. Trust me you won't be let down! GET IT TODAY!

BioShock lets you do the impossible as you explore a mysterious underwater city. When your plane crashes, you discover Rapture - an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, you have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. As little girls loot the dead, and biologically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn. Now you're trapped, caught in the middle of a genetic war that will challenge both your capacity to survive and your moral allegiance to your own humanity. Make meaningful and mature decisions that culminate in the grand question - do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture to save yourself - or risk all to become their savior?

Problems? Yes. But still a great game.
Back in June I replaced my 7 year old Toshiba laptop with a newer machine that sported an Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS card with 512MB. While at the store I also bought a bunch of games that would run with Vista. The salesman told me that BIOSHOCK was written by the same folks that did SYSTEMSHOCK AND SYSTEMSHOCK II, two games that I really enjoyed. Because I work on a ship and had no internet access I had to wait until I got home to finally install the game. I agree with the opinions of others about the DRM etc. and it does suck. But the game is great. Once installed mine ran flawlessly and I was able to use the mouse and key board controls easily. The detail and rendering are amazing and very fluid on my new machine. VERY creepy. You definately need a higher end graphics card if you want to enjoy this game.

It's a shame
The installation process is really hard even if you have a decent Internet Conection, so much troubles for a game! Don get this wrong, its a very very good and intelligent game, even better than others recently release, but what it's the meaning of buying a DVD disc if you have to download the game from a server on the internet..thats make no sense.
