My girls love them!! I purchased one for each of my girls (9 &10). They just love being able to create their own journals with pictures of their friends. All and all I would say it is an ok first digital camera. I also had some problems with one of them and it was quickly replaced by Amazon. That is excelent costomer service.

Will crash your computer Installed software for the camera and it crashed the computer. My husband (a computer engineer) blamed the bad software. I didn't believe him and took the camera with us to grandma's house. Her computer crashed too! It might have been a fun toy if it wasn't toxic to the computer. Watch out for variations of this same product. We will be replacing ours with another brand. Only gave one star rating because you can't rate lower than that!

HORRIBLE Quality! Doesn't last & is upsetting when it won't work! Horrible quality, great concept. My daughter loved the idea of this journal when she got it. It worked for about two weeks before malfuncting. i patiently read the directions for troubleshooting tips to no avail. it never worked again--my daughter was crushed when we had to return it. we opted not to try again with another one due to the numerous negative reviews for similar problems. examples of problems: stops recognizing your voice and won't open. starts to repeat commands when you've already followed its directions etc... (annoying and what a shame)
Neat toy for a young girl We got this for our 5 year old daughter for Christmas. This was without a doubt her favorite toy that she received. She has a six year old brother and the idea of keeping him out of her journal is very important to her.
Setting up the journal password is a bit difficult. The key seems to be to "whisper" the password. If you speak loudly the system seems to not understand or get overloaded, I am not sure.
But, the "whispering" of the password seems to add to the enjoyment of the experience for my daughter. She feels like she is keeping a secret.
I would say one time out of three the book will not let her in when she says the password, but even then it is simply fun and makes her laugh, "intruder alert."
So, to those of you who bought this, try to whipser the password, see if you have success. Those of you considering it, know that it is great fun, and well worth the price.

Disappointing for the price I bought this for my 7-year old daughter for Christmas. She saw it in a magazine and asked for it. I was skeptical based on the other reviews but I bought it anyway. The picture quality is very poor even after using bright lights. My daughter ended up just playing with the existing models that it comes with and seemed to be happy with that but for what I paid, this is a waste of money.

Fun, secure, educational... enough said! I bought this product as a Christmas present for my 9-year-old brother and sister, and they still haven't stopped playing with the devices. They even recruited a few friends around the block to join in - responding to a comment made earlier, I'm pretty sure not all of these neighborhood kids have devices, so I'm positive the PC clients works well. Regardless, the IM Me's are simple to use - my bother and sister even set them up largely on their own. I can't say enough about the educational value. I'm big believer in encouraging young minds to take advantage of technology (I wish I was encouraged as a child), and both my bother and sister are proving increasing savvy with the help of the IM Me. They're all set for the future.
The kicker for me was security. I must say I'm a bit of a traditionalist, so the ability to set up a fixed group of chatting partners is vastly preferable to the open IM programs where you never know who's going to contact a child.
The bottom line is that the device is a great piece of technology, providing the longest interactive experience my bother and sister have had ina long time (and sturdy... both devices have been dropped a few times already and still work great). I might even buy one for myself so they can communicate with me at a distance... I can join the fun!
