A worthy buy for single-player lovers
If you enjoy action with a dash of stealth involved, this game is for you. The game's graphics are remarkable, and the action scenes are quite cinematic. The easy roof jumping is also fun, and is achieved with a very good control scheme. Overall, you will find this game a worthy contender for those without Xbox Live Gold, or those who just want to play by themselves. I look forward to the rumored next 2 games.

Okay, so some people really seem to love this game, I am not one of those people. I though just based on looks the scenery was amazing but the gameplay was repetitive and rather boring. Anybody thinking about buying this one should play it first before plopping down any cash.

The Creed
This is probably going to be similar to many other reviews out there, but thisis my opinion.

Creed is very console orientated. It's selling points are it's visuals- I have a high end pc and can experience everything on full settings as smooth as silk, and it's atmosphere.

On that note, this game is perhaps best game in years to capture the atmosphere and 'feel' of a immersive gaming experience. It actually feels like you are walking around the Holy land, with great shadow effects and lighting. The people who move around you are the closest to actual human beings, without actually being walking digital people. Also, there are no edge effects with this. Everything is very smooth, no rock face is spoiled by a jutting graphic triangle or polygon.

The gameplay is far more simple than I expected, going on what others have spoken of. I can run up to a building, and infact climb and leap over buildings very easily. I think the only real issue is dropping from the hanging position, but that's just experimentation with keys (I'm PC version). Altir is an incredible acrobat and his motoions are some of the best I have yet seen. Having Altir climb and scale walls and buildings is perhaps the games most impressive feat. Dust and small stones fall away under his feet and as you move the camera around him, whether suspended or still moving you can view the people moving below him. That is the shiny end of the coin.

I enjoy the combat system, being able to engage multiple opponants in a realistic manner is fun. Three on one is far more exciting than one on one.

The cons. . well, there is not much in the way of interraction in the game. Sure, you speak to people, but it's not open ended, it's all mission and side mission based. Saving citizens from the guards to give scholar and vigilante aid is fine, but it gets a little bit silly after a while. YOu don't really want to jump down from up high to save somebody just to have some vigilantes appear that you really don't need just to have to climb back up again. Also, it defeats the purpose of stealth and unseen death when you slay guards, to evade them again and carry on like nothing happened. There is not much to 'chew on' in terms of story and side mission. I would love to be able to have a RP element. To perhaps drag your dead into dark corners, barrels, through open doorways. I would like to be able to purchase items from the market vendors, perhaps getting a better blade or having my blade sharpened .. simple details. Can you imagine something as applaudably immersive as Creed combined with something like Oblivion, the RP extravaganza? Creed innovates in a way that paves the way forward for future releases.

The last but not least of the 'issues' with Creed is that it is difficult to exit the game. You have to leave the memory, have your other character get off the table, then quite to the menu, select the name of your saved data and then exit .. that's far too overly complicated.

My advice, get this one in used condition or on sale. It's not that it's not great value for money, but Oblivion cost roughly the same amount and there was far more to experience with it.

It's certainly a worthwhile experience for a gamer, you will spend time marvelling at details and hunting for your next 'job' whilst enjoying the detailed vistas of the far East- get it if not for the experience of moving through the detailed towns and cities.

Three and a half out of five overall.

Unenjoyable.
I simply did not enjoy this game. I expected a portable version of the console game, and I was largely disappointed when I played a mediocre platformer.

The controls are clunky, and while the graphics push the DS to their limits, the unrealistic death scenes, cheap deaths such as hitting the water, and overall clunky controls with the D-Pad are just lame. It felt like a platformer from the Nintendo 64 age. And while the mini-games are fun, the lower-half of the DS is sparingly used, and the graphical effects beyond the textured 3D are just unimpressive and unimaginative. The game lacks the stealth components and free-roaming game-play that made its console big-brother great.

I was hugely disappointed and it was a waste of my money. I wouldn't recommend this to anybody.

Excellent concept, poor execution
This game has some great gameplay concepts, however it's designers made some grave mistakes during development. If you can get around to some of the seriously lackluster and repetitive missions, the game is overall pretty nice. Beware though, the ending of this game is horrible.. does not explain the story well at all.

TIPPING THE SCALES OF POWER WITH YOUR KNIFE
This is on of the most anticipated games to be ported to PCs. For this, the Director's Cut edition was produced, adding some content over the console versions (mostly rooftop action missions), and care was taken to make the gamepad to keyboard/mouse-transition as seamless as possible. For the most part it was successful.

This is a TREMENDOUSLY BEAUTIFULLY GAME. The first thing that grabs you is how REAL the city environments feel. The graphics are just OUT OF THIS WORLD! You will need a very good PC to enjoy their full potential (minimum requirements provided below), but real skies, dynamic shadows, facial expressions and realistically flowing robes are only beginning to describe it! Run on a roof and the other citizens will gather around and comment on your crazy behavior! Throw someone on a vendor's cart and he will come after you complaining about his ruined produce! And the city is alive well beyond your character. If only BIOWARE could take some lessons for its next BALDUR's GATE...

Adding to this is the wonderful sound! From the crowd murmurs and the NTCs cries for help, to the whistling of the wind and the well-chosen background music, a good sound-card and speakers set is recommended to truly enjoy this game. If you have a 5.1 speaker system (I do not) I can imagine the experience to become even more immersing.

As to the gameplay, you control Altaïr ibn La-Ahad ("The Flying One, Son of None"). He is a member of the Assassin Brotherhood that sides, well, with both...sides, during the 3rd Crusade. In a story twist, he is also your ancestor, the game being your/his flashback memories. This is a twist I could do without, but I would guess it lays groundwork for the sequels.

The Third person perspective works beautifully and will never loose your interest. Most missions require sneaking and murdering in the shadows. Others will have you eavesdropping for passwords or pickpocketing documents to gain access into target buildings. Some will have you sharpen those sword skills. Still, the game does not avoid its share of stupid "keep this...suicidal character from getting killed" missions. Keep in mind though that ASSASSIN's CREED is rather a strategically thinking action TPS, not a hack&slash fast-paced one.

Controlling your character with a keyboard/mouse takes a lot of getting used to as you have to manage running, climbing, fighting as well as modifying your actions from low to high visibility. The keys are remapable but their complexity will never let you forget you are playing a game. Now for some bad news.

These are the official MINIMUM Requirements:
* Pentium D 2.6GHz (YES, Dual Core!) (or AMD equivalent)
* 1GB RAM (WinXP) or 2GB (WinVISTA) (3GB RECOMMENDED!)
* nVidia 6800 (or Shader Model 3.0 compliant or ATI equivalent)
* Dual-Layer DVD-ROM (or BluRay disc)
* 12GB HDD Space (although my install folder was no larger than 7GB)

As one can see, this is worse than CRYSIS! What I cannot get is how on earth ASSASSIN works on only 512MB of RAM of the XBox, yet it is recommended to have...3GB of RAM on a PC! Sure, the extra content is nice but who did the porting, unpaid interns? Has ANY PC optimization been attempted at all?
Keep also in mind that (as with CRYSIS) in order to fully enjoy the game, barely meeting the minimum requirements means you will barely experience the game. I refuse to deal with WinVISTA so, obviously, this review pertains to DirectX-9. The game is also DirectX-10 compatible, something I cannot comment on though. And now for some good news.

UBISOFT has been recently hit with a $5million class-action suit for hardware (OK, "allegedly") damaged by StarForce bundled with its games. Since, they have announced to be abandoning its StarForce partnership - so let's all rejoice: unlike other UBISOFT games, ASSASSIN's CREED does NOT sport StarForce! Instead, a much milder SecurDisc is used.
It is a pity it took litigation to finally listen to their own customers (suing StarForce would make much more sense, but try finding them in Russia!), but let's count our blessings.

So, overall, this is a well made and beautiful, immersing (although quite short) game that needed more work in PC optimization (where it looses 1 star Overall) and character control (where it looses 1 star for Fun).

As Altair himself would have put it: "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted."
Well, not everything - and certainly NOT StarForce.
