Well suited for the beginner or intermediate dSLR user!
Okay, I admit it- I am very much a noobie to dSLR cameras. I have been reading some of the same sort of generic books that many others have that are recommended to all photographer-wannabes and I've been slowly ascending the dSLR learning curve. But I wanted a book slanted towards beginners or intermediate users that was specifically meant for XSi/450D users. THIS IS THE BOOK! And I have had it on pre-order for almost a month as it was to be one of the first books out specific to this camera.

It has been worth the wait! The very first chapter tells you how to get out there and start taking photos that are much more than merely acceptable. The second chapter is a virtual roadmap to the camera with plenty of large color photos detailing the location and purpose of all the various buttons and knobs. And from here on, the book just gets better! There are chapters on setting up your camera, getting the right exposure, working with light (natural and flash), downloading and editing images, and a great deal more.

My favorite is an entire chapter devoted to working with lenses. For an absolute beginner like me, this chapter has been sooo helpful. Not only does this chapter explain various lens types but it also explains the dos and don'ts of how best to use them. And wonder of wonders, there is even a section in this chapter subtitled "Ingredients of Canon's Alphanumeric Soup" that gives simple explanations of the data engraved or painted on the barrel or the ring surrounding the front of a lens. To professional or even advanced amateur photographers I'm sure that this is information assimilated long ago, but then this book isn't so much geared towards you. This sort of information is invaluable to dSLR beginners such as me and perhaps even to many intermediate level photographers.

Throughout the book there is extensive use made of fairly large color photographs and I should probably also mention that there is a good size glossary in the back followed by an extensive index.

I notice that Busch is nothing if not a prolific writer and based on the large number of favorable reviews on most of his books, he's a darn good one. And finally, no...I don't know the guy but I think I would probably enjoy being a student in a class if he taught them because he writes on a level that I can understand- not too simplistic and not too far over my head.

Not your father's D60 guidebook
I think Busch is onto something here, taking an entirely new approach to turn the tired old "camera guide" genre on its ear. I was very impressed with his Nikon D300 guide, and this new Nikon D60 book uses the same format, but is written at a completely different level. Where many Nikon D300 owners are likely to have some experience as they upgrade to a more advanced camera, those who purchase the D60 are probably less experienced, even if they are no less avid in their love of photography. This book is the perfect companion for these fledgling photographers.

The differences between this book and the typical guide are easy to see. For example, Busch's easy to understand, but exhaustive analysis of the Custom Setting Menu options alone spans 21 pages, which is more than what some other guides devote to all five of the D60's confusing menus. Yet, the explanations of the Custom Setting Menu are clear and concise enough for a beginner to quickly grasp, and with enough "why" and "how" to satisfy more advanced photographers.

Following the same format as his D300 guide, Busch teaches you how to fine-tune exposure, choose a metering method, master autofocus, and use the built-in flash, all written at the level of a typical D60 owner. For example, the chapter on lenses, like the one in the D300 guide, "decodes" the Nikon lens nomenclature system, tells you how to choose among wide angle and telephoto focal lengths, and provides reviews and descriptions of the most popular Nikon lenses. But where his D300 guide includes more expensive and "pro" lenses likely to be of interest to owners of the more advanced camera, Busch here concentrates on the more modest Nikon optics best suited for the Nikon D60. Throughout the book you'll find examples of coverage that has been down-shifted to make it easier for D60 owners to absorb.

Finally, note that the title of this book isn't "The Nikon D60 Guide" or some such. It's "David Busch's Nikon D60 Guide to Digital SLR Photography." It's more than a camera guide. It's an introduction to photography aimed at Nikon D60 owners.

A musthave!
Unless one has tons of experience in photography, this book is a MUST HAVE. We converted from a point-and-shoot to the Rebel XTi just over 4 months ago and have been crippled by not having a source of reference. In my opinion, Canon should consider having this book as their user manual instead of the pocket-sized next to nothing that comes with the camera upon purchase.

Lou Manna is a Legend
Lou Manna is my new hero... what he doesn't know about food photography is not worth knowing and yet he is incredibly generous with his knowledge. The devil is in the detail, but Lou is angelic in his ability to succinctly capture the elements that go to make a great image. That's why Olympus has awarded him the honour of making him one of their top 30 Visionary Photographers. His book clearly demonstrates the various techniques that can be used in photographing food, including tips and tricks for food-styling. The book uses a "Show and Tell" approach with images and captions rather than reams of text to communicate ideas. This makes it an extremely useful studio manual, as it is easy to access the information at a glance and see exactly what kind of effect you are aiming at. The book has advice that's relevant to the amateur enthusiast as well as the more advanced photographer wanting to unpack some of the secrets of food photography. I'm personally having enormous fun in my kitchen since reading this book and my photos have taken a noticeable jump in sophistication after feasting my eyes on the images in Lou Manna's Digital Food Photography book.

Thanks Lou - you are a Legend!

Just Buy It
If you are in any way interested in striking out on your own as a freelance photographer--or any other kind of independent professional photographer--just buy this book. It's got all the information you will need to get your business up and running. Of course, if your pictures such, this will do nothing to help you, because there is not information about exposure, lighting, etc. It's strictly business, so you might not need to buy this... yet.

Emil B
Clean, reasonable guide to OO and UML for beginner to medium level BA
There are so many opinions about how UML should be used and none can claim universal application. It is not only the complexity of UML and OO methodologies, but the variety of software tools that support these methods and then you have to deal with an infinite variety of real life situations and people. At the end of the day, a BA must write documentation and communicate findings, outcome and models to stakeholders, users, developers, architects and sometimes to third parties involved in the project. Every single person has a different view, companies have different document templates and actors have different education and skills. How can you write a book to teach UML and make anyone happy? You can't. So, you have to get something from every book you read that suits you, your training and the project methodology used in your business.

I think that Howard manages to walk you through the complexity of all this, recognising the inherent limitations that I listed above and present a framework that you can use to expand your horizons. The author is reasonably disciplined about the UML standard, so this is not a popular book for, say, accountants or florists that want to know about UML. Another positive point of this book is that you are provided with documentation templates that you can use straight away to write business requirements for your next project. Additionally, the author combines the description of UML constructs with an induction into OO methodology. Some authors fail to make this connection between the standard and the work methodology.

The book is written by using a real life project large enough to cover almost every aspect of UML. Howard is quite practical, whenever he feels that in practice some tools are not widely used, he will say so and avoid spending too much time on something just to show you how much he knows. The examples are simplified to keep the size of the book at a sane level. The depth of the book is adjusted so that beginners are not intimidated by the complex concepts, especially when it comes to discuss static modelling.

The last section of the book talks about testing and spends sufficient on explaining the foundation of structured test methodology. Testing is becoming more and more specialised work and progressively fewer business analysts do both business requirements and test implementation. However, it is important to connect these two activities, and Howard does that very well. Testing should be based on business requirements and verify that the requirements are fulfilled.

One not so positive comment that I would make about the book, is that it mixes too much the role of the business analyst and system analysts. I believe that he should have put more emphasis on separating the roles, because they require distinct set of skills. Also he should have made the reader aware that the project management methodology has an impact on the way the business analyst works. The subject of project management is not discussed very much here. If you work in a large organisation this is an important factor to consider. On the book cover the claim is that you will learn how to use IBM Rational Rose. I think that this is a little bit exaggerated. Overall this is a clean, nice and useful book, if you fall in the right category.
