Not quite what I was expecting... I bought this for my daughter as an Xmas gift. I have opened it once and done two of the experiments from it. First, my daughter is 6 so I must explain all of the science behind it, and because of the chemicals, I cannot allow her to play with it on her own.
Also, all of the experiments with the exception of one will take a few days or weeks to complete. My daughter got extremely bored extremely fast while we were mixing ingredients and talking about the crystals, however she gets excited to check on the growing crystals.
All in all, not a bad kit, but I think it was maybe a little overpriced for the entertainment value it doesn't really have.
Set includes: 8 bags of crystal growing chemicals, 9 crystal and geode growing cup molds, casting compound, safety glasses, 6 display pedestals and instruction manual.
"Grow your own collection of crystals in these sparkling colors: ""Golden Citrine"", ""Emerald Green"" and ""Aquamarine Blue""! Safe and easy to do "

Amazon.comNearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru atthe behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

Editorial ReviewThis kit is for the serious scientist in your family. It takes patience, interest, and some work to set up this procedure for growing crystals in your home, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Crystal growers will need a room that has a fairly constant temperature where the crystals can grow undisturbed. They'll also need help from parents boiling and pouring water. (Aluminum pans will not work.) It takes three to four days to complete the process. Nine different crystals can be grown with this kit. Sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, the kit is chock full of scientific information. Not only will young scientists learn about crystals, they'll get a chance to keep lab records and produce elegant experiments. Because some chemicals enclosed are hazardous, the kit should be used only under adult supervision. --Lee Strucker

Grows a beautiful crystal collection. We got this kit for Christmas three years ago. I still have all of the crystals we grew on the display stand on my dresser. This kit is cool. It makes regular small crystals in lots of colors, and you can also make plaster molds to grow geodes. It does take a few days for the crystals to grow, but once their done, you can even paint one with glow-in-the-dark paint!
Excavate, dig, study and display your very own natural crystals! Kit includes a plaster block with eight natural crystals buried inside, digging tool and brush, magnifying glass, display cases with covers, a drawstring carrying pouch and detailed instructions with fun facts.

Toy's much harder to use than you might think I had to do the project myself as there's no way that this could be completed by a young child. The instructions read that you use the hammer part of the tool and then when you break the entire block up, use the scrapper to get the crystal out and scrap off the extra dirt. Well, as an adult, the hammer they give is definitely safe for kids because there's no way it's going to break up the block. I had to scrape the entire block until I finally found the crystals.
When you open the package, it does say something along the lines of "just like an archaeologist, you have to have patience and scrape carefully or you will scratch your crystals." Well, you must have patience because it took me some seven hours to get thecrystals out. A couple times I gave up and had to put it away and come back to it. The one plus is that once you get one or two of the gems out, the others are often just underneath so it does get easier, but there's no way your item is going to look like the picture where you have mostly sand and just pick the gems out.
Oh, and if you are scraping one side and getting nowhere, turn the block over. Most of our gems were closer to one side.
Kit comes with a little gem storing page, a bag to put the gems in, and a plastic hammer/scraper. Our scraper was completely worn down once I was done.
For any mission, on any surface, the MT-61 Crystal Reaper always has the equipment to get the job done. With its twin spinning harvester blades, rotating treads and a detachable spaceship, rover unit and research lab, this rugged all-terrain vehicle is ready to collect the energy crystalsneeded to power the astronauts' vehicles and technology. But the alien strike-ship has a different plan! Includes three astronaut mini-figure, one glow-in-the-dark alien mini-figure and a new commander alien. 600 pieces.
