This was an emotionally tolling video to make. On top of it, I hate my voice being recorded, hate the sound of my voice...but I for some odd reason felt using my voice would have a better impact than text.

As some of you may know, I worked at a local animal shelter for 4 months over 2 years ago. There is a lot that went on there that I didn't openly discuss because it was difficult. Mostly because I was chosen to assist in euthanasia. And that is a hard thing to talk about. Its make even harder by the stigma many people have of it, assuming that those who euthanize animals "enjoy" it, because "anyone who loves animals wouldn't do it". Another comment made is "You are playing God"...No, when you have to euthanize animals you are FORCED to play God. Forced by irrespondsible dog owners and breeders. So most the time, I didn't discuss it. I saw the recent Oprah show about puppy mills and couldn't watch it anymore. I saw a puppy mill operation, I didn't need to see it again. But my mother kept giving me play by play and mentioned euthanasia and it kinda brought it all back to me. And last night, I felt I need to tell people about it. It was both difficult and therapeutic. But I feel necessary.

Peter Barnes was appointed General Manager and Creative Director of MDA Barr Woollard Cawrse NT in 1987, with overall responsibility for improving the creative output, client base and financial performance of the agency.
From a position of near closure due to previous poor management, within twelve months the agency became the leading and most influential advertising and marketing company in the Northern Territory.
Peter was directly appointed by the Chief Minister (The Hon. Steve Hatton) of the Northern Territory to oversee and direct Northern Territory Government advertising and marketing, which included the Territory's desire to achieve Statehood.
On the very day that Peter was to take up his new position, Steve Hatton was replace by Marshall Perron as Chief Minister. Peter lost his job, along with the opportunity to use his abilities in achieving Statehood for the Northern Territory.
Having no job, Peter went to work in Adelaide with Young & Rubicam Advertising and he wrote 'This Northern Land Of Mine' while at the agency in Adelaide.
"I really missed the Northern Territory and the song reflects how I felt in 1989, after I had to leave the Territory to find work" - Comment by Peter Barnes.
The problem in achieving Statehood for the Territory since Steve Hatton was Chief Minister, you had one Territory leader (Marshall Perron), who concentrated on death (voluntary euthanasia) and the other one (Shane Stone), wanted to stonewall the Territory into Statehood. At the very least, Steve Hatton understood what Territorians expected and desired, especially in the aboriginal community.

The Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia.
