It fills in the gaps Though a little expendable, this is still a fairly good collection of adult contemporary tunes featuring several hard to find tracks and spanning two and a half decades. The track listing attests that soft rock flourished mainly in the '70s as no less than 22 of the album's 30 tracks are from that decade alone. In the following decades, it took a back seat to other genres as well as MTV. The first disc runs just under 57 minutes and the second 62 minutes so a few more tracks could have been added but that's a very minor complaint.
If you love soft rock or adult contemporary music then you'll have no trouble enjoying this collection. Add a Review
Zergwatch: essential recordingAnyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve Gdula

Zergwatch:Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams from country-rock boy wonder (see Faithless Street) to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots--such asthe bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)--but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. --Anders Smith Lindall

wrong address The cd finally arrived, but not befoe after Christmas. Amazon had an old address for me and I couldn't change it. When they finally cancelled the order, due to not being able to deliver it, I had to re-order and then the CD came.
This is the first time there has been any kind of snag in Amazon procedure. I'll keep dealing with them. Add a Review
+ 1/2 stars...SUMMER OF LOVE Is Hit-And-Miss Collection The Beatles ushered in the Summer of Love in 1967 with the release of SGT PEPPER and their single "All You Need Is Love." Hip-O's 31-track collection attempts to recreate that magical time and--overall--does a decent job. Of course, there are no Beatles tracks (licensing restrictions, you know), but there are plenty of big hits: "Happy Together," "Incense and Peppermints," "Windy," "Respect," "I'm a Believer" and "Good Vibrations" are all No. 1's. [However, "I'm a Believer" and "Good Vibrations" were both hits in 1966; Hip-O should have used "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Heroes and Villains" to be historically correct.]
San Francisco--the epicenter of the Summer of Love--is represented by the Jefferson Airplane and Country Joe & the Fish, but where are the Grateful Dead, Moby Grape or Quicksilver Messenger Service? Instead, we get lightweight pop like the Sunshine Company's "Happy" (which didn't even crack Billboard's Hot 100). And how can you have a Summer of Love album without Donovan, who personified the era?
While SUMMER OF LOVE GOLD doesn't get it completely right, this is an enjoyable look back at the music of 1967. RECOMMENDED
'60s: Gold Various Artists This series Gold, put out by Universal Music Co. is usually of top quality. Culling from the vast Universal Catalog, the '60s, has an excellent selection of well known standards as well as several "hard to find " chestnuts. The sound quality is very good and 40 songs, make this a thrifty purchase for the asking price. Add a Review
HeeBeeGeeBees! All right. Any collection of 70s pop music that doesn't include the Bee Gees is asking for trouble. I wouldn't say steer clear of this particular little collection, but it does tend to make one suspicious. Add a Review
Back in da day classics! These songs definitely takes me back to a day and time of my college life as well as backyard and cabaret parties here in the Motor City. This genre sound known as the "New Jack Swing" set a slammin' trend for the 90's decade. It doesn't get too much better than this. These collaboration of songs are on point and well put together. Definitely something to be listening to while riding in the car and reflecting back on some good old times. A must have in the collection for any "New Jack Swing" fan or anyone that is a fan of r&b music ingeneral! Add a Review
Great compilation including some hard-to-find tracks I originally ordered this as a gift for a friend, but after listening to her copy, bought it for myself. The 2 disc collection offers an excellent compilation, including some that are indispensible and others that are very hard to find without buying an entire album by the artist. Most of the tracks sound as good as you're likely to ever hear them, considering their age and the technological limitations of the time. As always with such compilations, one can quibble over the inclusion or exclusion of certain songs, but this collection is essential for any fan of British rock of the 60's and 70's. Add a Review
