| REVIEW | Re-inventing themvelves once again, and splendidly. This is Mercury Rev's seventh studio album, following on from 2005's "The Secret Migration", largely viewed as a mis-step following the critical and commercialsuccess afforded them in the UK following "Deserter's Songs" and "All Is Dream".
Having taken the psychedelic lullabies of their breakthrough album, 1998's "Deserter's Songs", as far as they can go over subsequent releases, and having been somewhat eclipsed as a cosmic pop force by fellow travellers The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev have changed direction quite dramatically on their latest album.
They have re-invented themselves once already. The first time helped to take them from avant garde sound pioneers with a small group of followers, to a major US indie act.
< >Having found it difficult to continue growing as a band within the crowded indie market, they have decided to throw off the shackles once again with "Snowflake Midnight", using random note generator software and a bunch of synthesised effects to create a pulsating canvas of soothing digital ambience which belies the less-than-organic composition techniques.
Gone is the guitar sound, or the shoegaze tendencies.
Instead, we have swirling synths, En-esque ambience and ethereal flourishes worthy of Sigur Ros' majesty. There's not a dull moment among the nine songs that comprise this startling new beginning.
It begins with 'Snowflake In A Hot World', an affecting mini-classic to rank among the best in the band's canon.
The majestic sweep of old is largely absent, although "Dream of a Young Girl as a Flower" does build to a compelling Krautrock climax.
"Tracks such as the serialist-leaning "Runaway Raindrop" with its vast cinematic sprawl, the soaring, spiralling spectacular that is "Sense On Fire", and the blissful hymnal "Faraway From Cars" more than make amends and contribute magnificently to Mercury Rev's finest offering since 1998's "Deserter's Songs".- BBC
Give it a fair few listens and, and it will grow on you amazingly.

| REVIEW | MUST HAVE 4 DRUMMERS Dave Lebleu, percusionist for MP, did a magnificent job this time around, bringing the drumkit to the forefront of this band where it belongs. With each album this trio continually improves and perfects their sound. If you find yourself bored by the more melow instrumental bands of the post-rock era, this album will definatelly suit your interest; more along the lines of "Turing Machine" than anything... you can definatelly rock out to this album. |

| REVIEW | Rollercoaster ride of a journey As the stratospheric album cover ensigna suggests, this album will carry the listener to dizzying heights of transcendental euphoria and leave him/her gasping for more. Instrumentally more discplined than previous efforts they keep the sonic over indulgence that obscured "Bounces" underlying greatness, to a minimum on this record. The net result is powerfull rollercoaster ride of an album which, despite seemingly threatening to spontaneously implode at any given moment, never falls of the tracks. Highlights include the opening tracks wonderful Cale-esque piano anthem 'Empire State'. 'Racing The Tide' is a great rambling ode of self delivery sung with overpowering belief and conviction. 'Young Mans Stride' is easily the albums standout track and an abiding testimony to this groups immortal nature. Who else but the Rev can create a song that gesticulates between a blistering astro funk guitar riff one minute only to morph into a dreamy psychedelic soundscape the next without sounding even faintly ridiculous? Instead of waiting the twenty odd years it will enevitably take for this album to acquire it's status as a transcendental classic I would beseech the intelligent listener to buy beg/borrow/steel this album now! |

| REVIEW | YES This EP is real great, gives you an idea of what the band is evolving into, and it's freaking time that everyone discovers these guys !!! you also get some maserati who are also great ! AND a plus ! you get a DVD ! it includes a video for A data learn the language's "EGYPT" and this EP's "You give me problems about my business" and videos for all the maserati songs that are on the EP. this is a real fun EP, but i give 4 stars because it's short. I suggest listening to Adata learn the language and From the Vapor of Gasoline before getting this EP though. it's up to you ! |
