Not as good as RE4, but still very good.
I have played RE4 and this game. If you have to choose just one, go with RE4. Umbrella Chronicles is still enjoyable, though. There are reaction time challenges where you have to push the right button(s) or wave the remote in response to some threat. But as a rail shooter, in a way everything is reaction-time oriented. You have to destroy this object or pick up that object and do it now because the rail keeps you moving along, and often times you barely catch sight of the object out of the corner of your eye.
Some hints: when swarmed the front zombie is the delegated attacker; while he is approaching most of the other zombies just stand there staring vacantly. It is way easier to get critical shots on these background zombies than it is on the forward moving zombie. A particularly nice move is to use the handgun to pick off the background zombies and use the shotgun to knock down the forward zombie when it gets too close. Another nice move is when the forward zombie attacks, swing at it with the knife which repels it back. Then you can either knock it down with a shotgun or get a critical shot on it if it is knocked back far enough.
Another hint: It is frequently the case that when you are being swarmed, there is something useful hidden in the nearby environment. Don't let the swarm keep you from looking around.
A final hint: You get scored on the number of enemy hits. Anytime the cross-hairs turn white, you are aiming at a viable enemy. Shoot them, even if they're just lying motionless on the ground. These hits still count towards your score. In fact, it turns out that the cross-hairs will turn white when you aim at a fallen comrade. He is a soon-to-be zombie, even if he never gets up during the game. Also when you are swarmed by insects, each insect counts as an enemy, so taking out a lot of these drives your score up immensely. For instance, I've used a rocket on swarms of bees and gotten top scores for enemy hits (for some reason, if you take out a group with a grenade, that doesn't do anything to your enemy hits -- it has to be something you've shot at the enemy).
Supposedly you unlock infinite ammo on all weapons if you get an "S" (highest score) on every scenario. I've done this on 3 out of 4 of the major scenarios, but now that I'm on the final one, I'm running out of steam. They just made this feature too hard to unlock. I really like the idea of having an infinite number of magnum rounds or rockets, but it basically takes too long to do it.
There is an arcade game that is unlocked after you've played through the Umbrella Chronicles storyline, but it's not really all that fun. The mercenaries game that is unlocked after completing RE4 is way more fun.
I've tried the wii zapper and don't recommend it because you still have to have the numchuck outside of the zapper, and that makes the wii zapper feel unbalanced, and tires your arm out.
