Top rated PS3 Adventure title needs more adventure and less action.
Let me start off by saying that this is a great game; I generally have a hard time completing games because they're either too hard or I lose interest. I finished this one, however.
Adventure is my favorite genre for video games and good ones are few and far between on consoles. When I saw that this was (supposedly) in that genre and was garnering very positive reviews, I decided to pick it up (along with a PS3, but that's another story...) and once I started playing through, I quickly realized that this game was a little light on the adventure and chock full of action. Oh, there's an adventure story here, and a good one to boot, but what we have here is essentially a 3rd-person shooter.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of very well-designed cliff-scaling, wall-climbing, chandelier-swinging moments, but those are quickly interspersed between complex bouts of shoot-outs with scores of baddies.
Having said that, the AI is generally good and the levels are set-up in such a way that you'll have plenty of places to duck behind in order to dispatch the enemies. As you progress, the enemies do get tougher, but never require more than 3 non-headshots to kill (I've completed it on 'easy' so far).
The controls are solid as well. The aiming is very accurate and for the most part, Nate moves just as you want him to. There were a couple of times however, where I'd push in the direction I'd want him to jump, and he'd jump off at some bizarre angle and completely miss the ledge I was aiming for and fall to his death. This wasn't a big issue though.
As I mentioned before, the story is very good and easy to follow. The voice acting is done especially well and is very convincing. The graphics are also very impressive. When you run, you can see Nate's shirt crinkling with his movements and when he gets wet, his clothes get wet too. And when you move through brush and other small plant-life, you don't just clip through them, they move with you.
All in all, this is a great game. I personally would have liked to see more adventure and less action (it's about 20% / 80% respectively, in my opinion) but I still really enjoyed myself playing it. If you're a fan of action games, this is definitely a must-own.
