John Chamberlain, charged with possessing child pornography and awaiting trial was beaten to death by inmates as guards watched television, sent cell phone text messages and played video games. Inmates were also able to clean up the crime scene during the estimate 50 minute beating while guards neglected to perform required patrols every 30 minutes.
While video game related violence is nothing new, this appears to be the first incident where playing video games distracted authorities for enough time to commit a crime, replacing the old "throw a donut at the pig" routine of days gone by. Calls were made by Zergwatch to the Orange County Sherrif's Department inquiring about exactly which games the guards were playing were not returned.
