Covers less than 40% of the game It covers up to battles with Elite 4 and Champion. There is a lot more to explore and catch after that. One could say that the game becomes more interesting after beating the champion. Get a lot more information from online guides. Search for "pokemon diamond faq" using google.

Decent Strategy Guide I normally don't buy guides for the games that I play, because for me, part of the fun is figuring out what to do. I enjoy the surprise of what comes next, and knowing what lies around the corner just spoils it for me. However, there are a few games that I don't think guides can ruin, and one of those games is Animal Crossing (Wild World or the Gamecube version).
While I still maintain that it's better to figure out things on your own, this guide does a good job of keeping many things secret. It intentionally leaves out some of the different items you can get in the game, and only shows you roughly 75 to 80% of them. It also doesn't show you how to get specific haircuts, instead showing you a small gallery of potential haircuts you can receive.
I liked this guide, but I wanted to like it even more. It does a good job on the content it has, but ultimately falls short of it's full potential. I like the fact that it encourages you to find things out on your own, as I know far too many children that can't even play some games unless they have a guide for it. This guide is made for them.
Unfortunately, I'm a 25 year-old Adult, and I bought this guide hoping to get complete lists of everything obtainable in the game, and I didn't get that. It has some nice pictures for what it does have, but as for me, I was able to get all the information I needed on the Internet. Add a Review

very useful Anyone that has played the game can tell you there are a billion things to find a billion puzzles to solve. And if you miss one little part you are going nowhere for a the next few hours. This books serves as a great safety net for times that you get stuck. It has everything you could possibly want to find and its all very detailed.

It's going back I just recieved this pokedex, and it's going right back in exchange for the prima version.
If you want a guide simply to have a list of all the pokemon, their types, evolution levels, if they need a special item to evolve, and list of moves, then this book will be perfect for you.
The pictures are good, the pages are nice, it's a good quality book, it even has a bit of a walkthrough post elite four, but,
IF YOU WANTED A GUIDE SO YOU WOULD KNOW WHERE POKEMON ARE LOCATED, THIS BOOK HAS NO INFORMATION FOR YOU.
There is absolutly nothing on where to find pokemon or even which version you will find the various pokemon in (not as big of a deal for seasoned gamers, but a big deal for newbies and anyone with only one version). The #1 reason I purchased my first pokedex at the R/S/E level was because I had found all the ones that were common and needed help with rare and legendary pokemon.
The prima guide has typos, this is true, but, they also have locations.

Once again, the Prima guide trumps the official one. In the past, it used to be that the official Nintendo Power Player's Guides were a cut above Prima's Pokemon guides. With the whole fourth generation of Pokemon DS games, however, those roles have been reversed.
As far as battle strategy, there are essentially two "rounds" of play, as once you beat every colosseum the first time around, you can face them again with new rules. Nintendo only details the first round of challenge and gives brief blurbs about the second round challenges. Now, I understand that when you replay the game's challenges, most of your opponents' teams are selected randomly, but some have certain preferences for types that Prima points out but Nintendo does not. In addition, the final, "masters" tournament has fixed teams. Prima gives you the lowdown on their teams and strategy. Nintendo does not, only telling you about the tighter rules and the fact that you'll face legendaries like Dialga and Palkia. Not all that helpful.
Nintendo hates trees. Why else would they waste 116 pages of this thing putting in 3-D pictures of the Pokemon? Pretty, yes. Useful? Not really, as the "entries" are bare-bones and you'd be better off consulting a Pokedex guide.
The guide is rounded out with item lists and prices, which is about the only thing this guide has going for it- you can see what the various character outfits look like.
Don't waste your money. Get the Prima guide or use an online FAQ.

Enjoyment This game is quite challenging and a lot of fun. The trips you have to make, such as getting a drink for the admiral, takes quite a bit of time. However, it's not brutal and keeps one's interest. I love the dragon as he's so cute. Add a Review
