It's time to return to Liberty City, the town where all the rules were broken as Grand Theft Auto 3 revolutionized gaming and made the GTA series the biggest franchise on the planet. The PlayStation Portable edition is an all-new game set in the seedy, sprawling underworld of Liberty City. Just when you thought San Andreas was all you needed in your gaming life, Rockstar today announced that it is working on a brand new Grand Theft Auto title for the PSP. As youd expect from the highly secretive Rockstar, little is known about this latest in the GTA series except that it will take place in the streets of Liberty City (from GTA III) and that it is being developed by Rockstar Leeds. What you can be sure of, is that with the power of Sonys sexy new portable behind it, GTA on PSP wont be just a rehash of the 1997 original.

Having just made it back onto the streets of Liberty City after a long stretch in maximum security, Tommy Vercetti is sent to Vice City by his old boss, Sonny Forelli. They were understandably nervous about his re-appearance in Liberty City, so a trip down south seemed like a good idea. But all does not go smoothly upon his arrival in the glamorous, hedonistic metropolis of Vice City. He's set up and is left with no money and no merchandise. Sonny wants his money back, but the biker gangs, Cuban gangsters, and corrupt politicians stand in his way. Most of Vice City seems to want Tommy dead. His only answer is to fight back and take over the city himself.

REVIEWIt's The Little Things...
Recently I took a break from playing Bully and visited an old acquaintance of mine. My ex-girlfriend, actually, but we're still an amiable terms together. She asked what game I was playing nowadays, to which I replied, "Bully," and she asked if I thought the game would be fun on the Wii, and after thinking about it for a moment I said that it would be a great game on the Wii. The reason for this statement was because Bully is comprised of loads of mini-games. Pretty much the entire game is nothing but mini-games from shooting galleries, racing, dodge ball, and dozens more. The diversity of the mini-games is enough for any Wii owner to get full use out of the stupid controller that elderly people seem to love so much. While the graphics aren't stellar and San Andreas is definitely bigger, it's the little things in Bully that make the game really fun. Not just the above mentioned mini-games, but also the fact the Bully wants you to find all of the hidden items. The game gives you the locations of these items on you map. All you have to do is pass Geography. It's the little touches like that that could've been used on any one of the Grand Theft Auto games. How many of us really found all of the statues on GTA without the use of a book or downloaded reference. I sure as heck didn't.

Unfortunately, while it's the little things that make Bully fun, it's also the little things that severely hurt the game, as well. Little things like say...NOT CRASHING would've made the game at least 42% better. It's not just the fact that it crashes, but that it crashes right after a big mission before I get a chance to save! Other little things could've been added to improve this title as well. like the ability to take off your helmet when not riding. I now you need a wardrobe to change clothes, but all I need are my hands to take off the helmet. If you want to be a law abiding citizen while on your moped, then be prepared for a lot of cut-scenes with Jimmy wearing full face protection. Maybe if they have a peanut shell helmet it would go over better, but unfortunately they don't. There are also a lot of cut scenes where the animation looks unfinished. Why does the drunken teacher's hand go through the bottle of booze instead of holding it? You see arm, bottle, and then fingers. It looks quite ridiculous. It's the little polishing touches that testers and QA people get paid to do, but are not so apparent with Bully.

Overall, the game is pretty fun. I would recommend renting it instead of buying it, though. Save your money for another day unless, of course, you own a Wii. Then I recommend you dip into that monthly Social Security check and splurge a little.

Pros:
Controls: A- (probably an A+ on the Wii)
Playability: A
Story: A- (you see a lot of plot twists coming)

Cons:
Stability: D
Graphics: B- (this is a next-gen game after all)
Polish: C (looks a little unfinished)

REVIEWGreat use of the Wii
I heard about this game for the PS2 and that it was pretty fun, but since I had never owned a PS2 I had to wait til I got a Wii to buy it. I bought it blindly without ever trying it, just noticing that Rockstar (GTA-maker) had made it and reading a few online reviews.

The game is great. There is so much to do whether you go to class or not. There are tons of missions and minigames as well as just following the actual story, which for me, is impossible to do so far because wandering off and doing what I want can be addicting.

One of the best things about this game is the controls. The game makes great use of the Wii sensor on the Wiimote/nunchuk as you actually use the controllers to punch (think WiiSports boxing) as well as other uses like uppercut punches, shaking to get teachers off of you, shoving a bully, performing tasks in class, etc. It makes the game really interactive and fun.

The availability to interact with most objects is a huge plus, as you can hide in trashcans (from angry teachers or bullies), pull fire alarms, use your chemistry set to make firecrackers, etc., buy pop from a pop machine, hide in lockers/girls' closets... the list is endless.

If you like games with tons of freedom and a great story and you haven't played the original Bully, buy this. The controls are a huge plus too. If you have played the PS2 Bully, I hear it's nearly the same, with a few extra missions and characters.

Title: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Price: Check Pricing & Availability
ESRBRating: Mature
Suggested Retail Price: $10.00

Zergwatch: It may not be a splashy leap forward, but Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in its own deep, dark way does just as much to move and revolutionize video games as its two predecessors, Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. As in previous installments, here you play as a thug with problems you must steal and shoot your way out of, but the problems this time are disconcertingly more realistic. You play as Carl Johnson, known on the street as CJ, a likeable criminal type who has just returned to his hometown, Los Santos (a fictionalized Los Angeles), to find that his mother has been murdered and that the police have framed him for another murder. Reunions with his friends and a troubled relationship with his brother set off a sprawling, complex plot line, taking place at first in the immediate Los Santos area but eventually spilling into San Fierro (based on San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas).

CJ
You play as Carl Johnson, known on the street as CJ.

This is an honest effort to create an engaging story about sympathetic characters caught up in a brutal environment that is on par with a movie or novel.

Gaming Gangsters

Where Vice City took its cues, with tongue firmly in cheek, from the 1980s television series Miami Vice, San Andreas is a sincere homage to early 1990s innercity gangster films like Menace 2 Society and Boyz `N the Hood. This is an honest effort to create an engaging story about sympathetic characters caught up in a brutal environment that is on par with a movie or novel. If that effort hits a few flat notes (you would have to be totally desensitized not to wonder if it's OK to make entertainment out of driveby shootings), it may also mark the first step toward video games growing up. The first thing that fans of earlier GTA games will notice is the range of action is much wider now: Along with shooting, running, and driving, there's now swimming, eating, working out, shopping, and, yes, getting a haircut. All this means the game has a fairly steep learning curve. But, though the pick-up-and-play appeal of Grand Theft Auto III may be long gone, your access to the action becomes fairly transparent after a little practice. My only serious complaint is that, with the controller now crowded with such previously unheard-of functions like "Gang Active" and "Talk Positive," you can drive only with the left analog stick. A minor point, but it makes cars a lot more difficult to handle.

Bikin' it
Bicycles take on a surprisingly central role.

Vehicular Variety

It would be hard to surpass the variety of automobiles available in earlier games, and San Andreas wisely does not for the most part try to compete on that score. Instead, it's bicycles of all things that steal the show. The bikes' speed and flexibility are perfect for many of the missions, and there is something about cruising through the streets and basketball courts on a BMX that just feels right. If you play far enough into the game, you will also be rewarded with the chance to fly a number of aircraft, and flying is something Rockstar makes a greater effort to get right this time (welcome news for anyone who struggled with the planes and `copters of the earlier games).

Lackluster Graphics--but a Real Feel

Graphics--never a huge priority for Rockstar--actually take a step backward from the luscious, tropical look of Vice City. Textures are rendered with only a cursory attention to detail, and contours are often blocky. It scarcely matters, though, because no matter how San Andreas looks, it feels real. This is due in no small part to voice work by an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Ice T, James Woods, Peter Fonda, and Outkast's Big Boy and a stellar soundtrack with tunes by Soundgarden, 2Pac, Public Enemy, and even a few country classics from the likes of Willie Nelson. But it's not just realistic, San Andreas is also vast, encompassing three big urban centers and huge swaths of rural land (complete with shotgun-toting farmers) between them. This vastness does mean, however, that there can be a lot of tedious driving to get to the missions, which, along with some awkward sequencing of the cut scenes (they are in places stacked one on top of the other), means that there is a bit too much downtime. But never mind the quibbles. Ladies and gentlemen, we have another classic on our hands. --David Stoesz

Pros:

  • Astonishingly vast game space
  • Vivid character development
  • Complex, engaging plot
  • Enormous range of available actions

Cons:

  • Occasionally awkward game design
  • You can no longer steer cars with the directional buttons
  • Steep learning curve

REVIEWTHE BEST GTA GAME SO FAR!
Man, ill tell you, i have no idea why the creatirs of GTA didnt make another game like this one! This game was the most interactive, exciting, and addictive GTA game ever! For the first part, i loved how you could change yourclothes from your head to feet and get stats like respect, muscle and sex appeal. Second of all, i was impressed of the gunplay. In the other GTA games, the gun sounds (i.e. AK-47) were very fake. It didnt even sound like a real gun!! WTF??!! But in SA, you get to hold TWO guns in both hands and its like firing a real gun because it makes a life-like sound. In a nutshell, i reccomend this game to anyone who loves GTA and can tell the difference from Real Life to Fiction.
