Surprisingly just okay
I'll admit right off the bat that I'm new to the Soul Calibur series. This is the first one I've played. That being said, I am no stranger to fighting games. When I read about SC4 it sounded like it had so much promise. What I got seemed kind of just okay. There are really four things going for SC4: 1)Terrific graphics, 2)Large number of characters, 3)Customized Equipment, and 4) Customized Characters. Number three is the stand out of the game. Through purchase and acquisition there are a huge number of equipment and weapon pieces availble in the game. They let you give your players a very respectible range of abilities. Couple that with the ability to customize your own character down to their facial features and you get something really great and unexpected in a fighting game. But all this seems like window dressing. It's all very pretty but feels of little substance. The game play is repetitive and the story is really non-existent. There's nothing that pulls you into the game. It really seems to be an almost XBox Live geared release. That's where the fun is had. But strangely the single player game takes up most of the space and feels dull. $60? No. If it was a $20 Xbox Live download I'd be all over it. My recommendation? Save your dough.

Give this one a chance to grow on you.
I must say that my first impression after purchasing this game was "Am I missing something here?" I chose Darth Vader in arcade mode and the credits were rolling within ten minutes of fighting a few different characters. I tried fighting online, but couldn't ever get into a match due to heavy usage. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

A few days later I practiced using many of the different characters and the hundreds of moves that come with them and I realized that this isn't just a regular button mashing fighting game. The controls are VERY precise and pressure sensitive. There's a lot to learn here.

In my opinion this game really shines when you go online. After a week or so of buying this game it got a whole lot easier to find available matches. I love the fact that you can fight opponents online with the same precise controls as in the single player game. Matches rarely go past ten minutes making this a perfect online multiplayer game if you don't have a long time to devote to it. (I hate getting stuck in COD4 if you have something that you need to get done all of the sudden.)

Anyhow, I highly recommend this game if you like fighting games with precise movements and quick combos. If you have this game, but don't like it, give it another try. You might be pleasantly surprised. I would have given it two stars the day I bought it, but now I shooting for five.

Very fun game
This game is very polished and balanced, and I think fans of fighting games as well as casual gamers can enjoy it. Novice and expert fighters seem to have close battles more often, unlike Dead or Alive where experts always clobber novices, or the opposite end in Smash Bros. where the battles can be very random. Also you can make your own character and the online mode is pretty good, but not amazing. There's no online tag team and it's one-on-one fights only, but at least you can spectate when it's not your turn and there's not a lot of lag. Unlocking things like new weapons, characters, stages, and clothes is very rewarding.

The graphics deserve special mention. They're probably the best I've seen in a video game ever, with emotive and nuanced facial animation, antialiasing, blur, heat effects, and 1080p running at 60 fps. If you have an HDTV, this game will surely impress. The sound isn't nearly as amazing but there are some catchy songs in the soundtrack and the voice overs and weapon effects are decent. Yoda and the Apprentice are cheap, but beatable and it didn't seem as important as manyother reviewers said it was.

Great Game, OK Bundle
Disclaimer and Background: I've played SC 2 and 3 at the arcades, and only have SC2 for the PS2, so obviously, SC4 was going to be substantially superior graphically. I also can't compare any games from SC4 versus SC3, since again, I've only played the arcade version of SC3.

Additionally, I'm sure a bunch of people have already reviewed the actual game, so I'll focus instead on the Premium Edition content.

You get the game (of course), the Tshirt, a code for in game material, and the "book". Oh, and some "tournament bracket card", andthe metal case. Here's a breakdown of the extras:

1. Tshirt: Pretty good quality shirt, I've washed it a few times and looks good so far. The silk screen isn't very sharp, though, it's as if you're comparing a bootleg concert Tshirt to a real thing. The picture's there, but it's not high resolution. But at least it wasn't 50/50 cotton/polyester like the real crappy Tshirts. My son liked it, but since he's only 9 years old, I figured that Dad will wear it instead.

2. Code for in-game material: Very straightforward instructions for entering the code in the Playstation network (internet connection required, of course). It didn't exactly specify what was given, and I didn't bother to go through each character model to look for them, but if you're a completist and need every available costume and look, well, there you go!

3. "Art Book": As another reviewer said, this one's a negative. The picture shown in Amazon shows a hardcover book, and it's supposed to be an Art Book, according to the description, but it's only half that. The first half of the book is a short, but decent, comic, about SC, and introduces a couple new characters you'll find in the game (no, not Darth Vader). Basically, if you got a regular cheap comic (since it's black and white), and shrunk it down to the size of 7 by 5, that's the first half of this "art book". The second half does indeed have some drawings of SOME of the characters. I would have thought that they would have at least included pics of all characters, but oh, well.

4. Tournament bracket card: I've never been to a SC tournament, so I have no idea if this is a replica or if there's any significance. Just a plastic card, no use for me.

5. Metal box: Nice, everything fits into it, its closure snaps okay. You can probably use it as a candy dish or something.

Overall: Is this a good package? Yes. Is it worth the extra 20 bucks? I would say so, the Tshirt by itself is mostly worth it, the comic/art book is worth 2 bucks, and the case, additional content (costumes) and that nifty card is just extra dressing.

I'd recommend this Edition over the regular edition, especially if any of the extra items are things you'd care for. If not, you're not losing out too much by buying the regular edition. Either way, I'd get the game, though, because graphically, the game is very good. Cutscenes are also good, and the stories are okay.

Great for Soul Calibur and other fighting games.
There's really no other choice when it comes to arcade fighting sticks for your 360, this is it. The controls are responsive, the unit itself is quite sturdy, even after my wife played on it constantly mashing the buttons as fast as she can, the buttons hold up well. No complaints on it although wireless would be nice, but not necessary.

Amazon.comThe Star Wars saga will continue in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a videogame developed by LucasArts, which casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Paired with the powerful Havok Physics™ system, these new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of anything in the environment so that everything reacts exactly like it should - wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, plants on the planet Felucia bend like plants on the planet Felucia would, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioral-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behavior on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

Game Features:

  • During the period between Episodes III and IV, players hunt Jedi in the role of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice.
  • Unleash and upgrade the Secret Apprentice's four core Force powers - Force push, grip, repulse and lightning - throughout the course of the game, and combine them for ultra-destructive, never-before-seen combos.
  • Examples of unleashing the Force in ways never thought possible:
    • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force push enemies into walls - he'll Force push enemies through walls.
    • The Secret Apprentice won't just Force grip foes to throw them aside - he'll Force grip them in midair, zap them with lightning, then drop them to the ground to explode like a bomb.
  • In addition to new adversaries created just for the game, such as fugitive Jedi and Force-sensitive Felucians, players will also confront and associate with familiar faces from the Star Wars films, including Darth Vader.
  • Visit locations such as Episode III's Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk and the floral Felucia, the junk planet Raxus Prime, plus an Imperial TIE fighter construction facility.
  • The Force Unleashed is LucasArts' first internally developed title for next-generation consoles, and it represents the first in-game collaboration of talents and technology between LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic, two companies now finally under one roof at the new Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio district.
  • The Force Unleashed debuts Digital Molecular Matter from Pixelux and euphoria behavioral simulation from NaturalMotion Ltd.
  • LucasArts is preparing an unprecedented promotional effort around the launch of The Force Unleashed, encompassing a full line of toys and game-based action figures from Hasbro, as well as a full publishing program from Dark Horse, Del Rey and Palace Press.

Meet the Cast
The Star Wars Saga will continue in 2008 with LucasArts' biggest-ever video game event. Set during the "dark times" between Episodes III and IV, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed portrays the previously untold story of Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice -- and now you can put a face to that mysterious character as well as the major supporting cast members as LucasArts unveils the actors set to star in The Force Unleashed.

The Cast of The Force Unleashed

The New Technology of The Force Unleashed
With The Force Unleashed, LucasArts not only introduces a new chapter in the Star Wars saga, but also two completely new and innovative technologies -- Digital Molecular Matter by Pixelux Entertainment and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. These groundbreaking technologies combine with Havoc physics to create true next-gen gameplay and the Force like it's never been seen or experienced before.

Could've been great, but missed the mark
Unfortunately, incredible graphics, awesome powers, and an innovative approach to combat can't ultimately save this game, as glaring shortcomings in gameplay and concept make themselves obvious too often. Whether the good outweighs the bad depends on your tolerance level, I suppose. I find myself tossing down my controller and turning off my console in frustration far too often.

Your super powers are indeed awesome (when they work), and you'd be hard pressed to find a game that offers more fighting combinations, powers, and ways of dispatching your enemies. But there's an inconsistency to every aspect of the fighting. For instance, you can lift huge nearby objects with yourforce power and hurl them at opponents, but because of difficulty with targeting and controlling the trajectory of the objects, this becomes an exercise in frustration. Also, the effectiveness of your lightsaber attacks against all too many enemies is nearly nill. This forces you to rely on the same kinds of cheap tactics that actually do work, which of course drains the fun out of the game, and removes the element of creativity and variety.

I wish the developers had gone the extra mile and fixed those aspects the game needed to be absolutely legendary and out of this world fun.

Final analysis, rent, don't buy this game.
