Minority Report interface for CAD: Wiimote and Solidworks

Movie of a student research project to connect the Nintendo's wiimote IR camera capabilities to Solidworks. Inspired by the work of Johnny Chung Lee at CMU, in particular "Tracking Your Fingers with the Wiimote" (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/ )
Technical background: the wiimote has a great 1024x768 pixel 100 Hz camera built in which can track up to four infrared dots. The wiimote is connected to the computer through bluetooth.
We ended up selecting Glovepie as it gives instant feedback onscreen and offers translation to simple mouse events. A more intricate version is planned soon.
How to hack a Wiimote to use a screen like Microsoft Surface

This user interface project allows you to control objects on a display using gestures, working like Microsoft's Surface but without touching the screen at all. Inspired by Johnny Chung Lee's work, the system requires you to wear Minority Report-style gloves equipped with infrared emitters on your fingertips. A Wiimote on top of the display keeps track of these IR LEDs, while the software can read the motion down to two-finger pinching gestures for image zooming. Also watch more electronics how to videos including tips, tricks, advice, and directons on hacks, mods & circuitry for free. |

Using a Nintendo Wii Remote (Wiimote) and a projector you can turn any surface into an interactive musical DJ tool. This video demonstrates algoriddim's Mac DJ software "djay" ? http://www.djay-software.com ? on a MacBook Pro, projected onto a glass table.
I used an IR light source strapped to my finger with a push button switch to activate mouse clicks. The wiimote can track the position of my finger using Johnny Lee's famous Wiimote software: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
A Mac version of this tool, which I used in this demo, "WiimoteWhiteboard" can be downloaded at: http://www.uweschmidt.org/wiimote-whiteboard

This is a short video of me wandering around my map in Jailbreak: Source using CamSpace. CamSpace allows you to use your webcam as a tracking device, and your fingers or body as a kind of Wii remote. I attached a small piece of blue sticky tape to my nose, locked the camera to it, then used my head to wander round my map and shoot at things! |

Today we, Akihiko SHIRAI and Gill Van Herzele, have tried to develop a 'Wiinority Report Interfrace' that was inspired by Johny Lee at CMU. No real results yet, but we succeeded to detect one finger with a reflection tape using 4 IR-LEDs. We figure we need a high power LED array. Besides I forgot to change the calibration range of Wiiremote. Tomorrow we hope to get better results... o_k |
