Pieces don't stay together I've bought quite a few Melissa & Doug toys for our kids and I'm usually impressed by the quality and durability of their products. We even have a bunch of their other puzzles and they're fantastic; big, vibrant, durable, with a snug fit between pieces. My preschooler absolutely loves the T-REX 48 pc Floor Puzzle and the Dinosaurs 48-Piece Floor Puzzle.
I bought this U.S. Map puzzle with high expectations, but was sorely disappointed. With this puzzle, it is critical that the blue border surrounding the states stay together, because the individual states are shaped like, well, states so they won't stay contained unless the enclosing frame stays put. It doesn't. The big blue edge pieces are slightly warped (maybe this is because they are so big) and they don't stay together at all. Not even on a hardwood floor. And with the outer pieces just itching to spring apart at the slightest touch, arranging the states inside is a challenge even for me. It's hopeless for my kids.
It's a shame that this flaw in completely ruins this puzzle, because otherwise it would be great. It's big and colorful, with interesting and educational pictures on the states that engage my kids. My kids and I tried to assemble it a few times before giving up on it altogether. Now Texas is a frisbee and Maine is exploring the dusty recesses under our hallway bookshelf.
The Best Educational Toy !!!!!!!!A++++++ This toy is just the BEST my 3 years old son is lerning so fast and we spend more quality time as a family , this puzzle is for everyone no just for kids, I love it!!!!!!!

REVIEW
Wonderful puzzle with sound My kids don't know the names of the states yet (age 6) but really enjoy exploring maps. This wooden puzzle is great because it says the name of the state as you put them in the puzzle. The kids really do like playing with it. We keep the pieces in a plastic bag so we don't loose any of them, and sometimes the puzzle will speak even when not putting a piece in, but that is pretty minor compared to the enjoyment and learning. Highly recommended.

USA Puzzle Great Fun for All Ages I love this product. My 4 and 2 year olds are having a lot of fun with it, and I must admit, I love it too. It's a great way to start your kids on a geography adventure. All states are individual pieces, except for Conn and RI which are together. My boys even drive their cars cross country. Also, the pictures on some states open the discussion for what's there - I wish there were more! This is a great learning tool!

A big hit with our twins! $40 may sound like a lot for a foam floor puzzle, but our 2.5yr-old boys got this for Christmas and its become their favorite toy. One boy already knows his states better than his mom, "No mama, New Jersey goes right here!" Unlike most other floor puzzles, each piece is shaped like a state, instead of the ubiquitous "puzzle" shape. There are also some inset shapes within a state, our favorite is the "arch" in Missouri. In my opinion, these more varied shapes allow for fun learning, whereas the common "puzzle" shapes are more of a trial and error exercise.
Unfortunately, the ink labelling each state has started to rub off. I can't tell the Great Lakes apart anymore, not that I really could before. But, we called the company and they have offered to ship us a whole new replacement puzzle. That's pretty impressive.
We're starting to look around for more puzzles like this. I'd love to find one of the world or even just other countries. A great idea and a great buy.
